Welcome to The Panel, where founders talk about building a better business and a better life. I'm Justin Jackson, co-founder of Transistor.fm.
**Brian Casel** (0:17)
And I'm Brian Casel, founder of Builder Methods.
**Jordan Gal** (0:20)
And I'm Jordan Gal, founder at heyrosie.com. And I'm your host for the day.
**Justin Jackson** (0:25)
I'm in charge.
**Brian Casel** (0:27)
Let's go.
**Jordan Gal** (0:28)
I gave you warning. I don't think it was necessary. It's not really a warning.
**Brian Casel** (0:32)
You made me nervous.
**Jordan Gal** (0:33)
I was feeling my power, you know?
**Brian Casel** (0:35)
Yeah, yeah.
**Justin Jackson** (0:37)
Some people in chat responded to that because I sent it out in the email. I was like, it's time for discipline.
**Brian Casel** (0:43)
We're going to get a stern talking to from Jordan Gal.
**Justin Jackson** (0:44)
Yeah, yeah, we're going to get talking to.
**Jordan Gal** (0:52)
Well, thank you, everyone, for joining us. We are going to get into a few topics. We're going to talk about marketing not working anymore. We're going to talk about overcomplicating things, which is in the air these days.
**Justin Jackson** (1:04)
Yeah.
**Jordan Gal** (1:05)
There's overcomplication. Yes. Okay, we're going to that. And why don't we start? This is the big theme that's in on my mind when we chatted briefly before recording seems to be on your mind also.
Summer's coming to an end.
And summer definitely changes our day to day. All three of us have kids, the schedule changes, your day to day changes, stress, the number of vacations and so on. This week for me has been different because Rock and Jess, basically my fellow leaders in the company, are both on vacation. I was not, and I felt like a sucker. So I decided what the right thing for me to do was to just turn down the temperature or the speed on the week and just kind of enjoy a nice casual week.
**Justin Jackson** (1:58)
Nice.
**Jordan Gal** (1:59)
And that meant a lot of walks. It's been beautiful here in Chicago. I live right by the lake. So I've been taking big walks.
And so what I want to ask the two of you is summer ending and the fall beginning, September, like we make this turn. It's like the last lap home stretch between September, December feels like a beeline of like, you got to get rolling. You got to get things done. You got to accomplish what you want because next thing you know, it's Thanksgiving. And then next thing you know, it's the holidays and the year's over.
**Justin Jackson** (2:32)
Yeah. For me, I think one weird thing is that the introduction of Fable really augmented my pace. Remember, I was like, oh, Fable deadline's coming up. I'm going to build a bunch of stuff. And I got into this building mindset. And in May, we announced this video podcast hosting beta for Transistor. And so for the team at Transistor, and for me personally, I'm just, I've, the whole summer, I felt like even with vacations and trips, I just felt like I was up here.
But now we're transitioning into, my youngest is going back to school, and I just, it felt like it just went up a notch for me. And I'm just feeling this, like, so much pent up energy of, like, let's get going. I wanna move, I wanna get some stuff shipped. I want us to be making progress. And yeah, so I think a similar thing, you know, people, we had someone on our team move houses, actually two people move houses. We had people take vacation. One of our, Michael, he drove all the way up to Dawson City in the Yukon.
So it's, wait, is Dawson City in the Yukon? Now my geographies, but anyway, up north.
**Jordan Gal** (4:04)
Very far north Canada.
**Justin Jackson** (4:06)
I'm, but so I am feeling like, okay, we're back, everyone's back, it's time, you know? So when you mentioned it before the call, I was like, man, it's true. I just feel that as you transition out of summer, it's like, okay, happy hour time is done. Like, it's time to build.
**Brian Casel** (4:28)
Aside from the calendar, is there, Justin, is there anything like, I don't know, like metrics-wise or like, tangible that's like, that motivates you, that like, you look at something and you're just like, that is not where I want it to be, and that is what fires me up to get going on something.
**Justin Jackson** (4:44)
Like, is there anything like that? There's so many things, so many factors. One big factor is we had this summer intern, and he was hungry. Like, he came in, in May, and he was just like, I am going, this is a great opportunity, I'm going to deliver. And he just was every single day at work over, he just went above and beyond what we could have ever wanted. He set the bar very high for anyone who's gonna follow him.
