Behind the Bastards

September 22, 2026

Robert sits down with Jamie Loftus to discuss a bastard who really did it all: started his own country and became dictator, carried out a genocide, and matured to quack energy healer using magic to improve men's sperm count. Sources: Radovan Karadzic’s New-Age Adventure - The New York Times

Never forget 9-Eleven, and never forget to listen to Behind the Bastards, the podcast that you are all listening to now. This is our 9-Eleven episode, Extravaganza, even though you'll be hearing it probably several weeks after 9-Eleven. So I don't even know why I'm like temporalizing this, because it's just gonna feel old when it hits you. You will already have had your 9-Eleven cake. You'll have opened all of your 9-Eleven presents.

Jamie Loftus (0:28)

I'm feeling a little somber. So if you feel a tinge of sadness in my voice, just that's me not forgetting. I still...

Sophie (0:36)

That's Jamie remembering.

Jamie Loftus (0:38)

I'm always remembering.

Sophie (0:41)

The like discourse today online was like the worst of the right being like, oh, did you see mom Donnie and AOC having a giggle during the 9-Eleven tribute in New York?

Robert Evans (0:57)

9-Eleven tribute, yeah.

Sophie (0:58)

You're like, did you see that Donald Trump wasn't there? I don't care. I don't care about any of these things. I don't care about any of these things.

Robert Evans (1:07)

Nah, it's fine.

Sophie (1:08)

Just...

Jamie Loftus (1:10)

It is bizarre that like of all of the days that we... The thousands of days we've been very insincere about it. We're like, we're gonna do just one.

Robert Evans (1:21)

We're gonna remember. We're gonna remember.

Jamie Loftus (1:23)

And today we're gonna remember for real, for real. For real, for real.

Robert Evans (1:28)

What I remember on 9-Eleven is the film Big Trouble, which was tragically delayed as a result of 9-Eleven because it featured a plot line in which a nuclear weapon was set off in a commercial airliner. And so tragically, Tim Allen lost what would have been one of his better comedy releases.

Jamie Loftus (1:45)

And we won't forget that.

Robert Evans (1:47)

I will never forget that, Jamie.

Jamie Loftus (1:50)

I'll never forget they changed the climax of Lilo and Stitch. Stitch hijacked a plane.

Sophie (1:55)

They did.

Jamie Loftus (1:55)

We did not be having, we can't have Stitch be doing al-Qaeda activity.

Sophie (2:00)

Yeah. Yeah. You know what I'm really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really excited about? Oh, see, Sophie, that's not how you lead into this.

Robert Evans (2:10)

I was going to say, you know how there were two towers on 9-11?

Sophie (2:14)

Oh, that's better.

Robert Evans (2:15)

Jamie Loftus has a book coming out called The Tower.

Sophie (2:19)

Wow, what a plug.

Robert Evans (2:20)

Jamie, you wanna tell people about it?

Sophie (2:22)

See, I'm ready.

Robert Evans (2:22)

I was ready to plug.

Jamie Loftus (2:25)

Wow, okay.

Yeah, there's a secret third tower. And what if it was a 9-11 book?

Sophie (2:31)

What if it wasn't WT7?

Jamie Loftus (2:33)

I've been secretly remembering for years. You have no idea. Yeah, no, my first novel is coming out. It's about just one tower, but a beautiful tower.

It's a novel about an architect who falls in love with their own blueprint and then spends 20 years trying to get the love of her life built so she can leave her husband for the building.

Robert Evans (3:00)

Awesome. I'm excited to read it.

Jamie Loftus (3:02)

The highs are high, the lows are low.

Robert Evans (3:05)

The lows of writing a book are very low.

Jamie Loftus (3:08)

It's the hardest thing in the world. That said, I'm sure by the time you hear this, I've figured it out.

Robert Evans (3:16)

Jamie, it's very appropriate that you've said writing a book is the hardest thing in the world because the subject, the bastard, we're talking about this week, is an author. I think we'd agree with you, writing a book is the hardest thing in the world, which is impressive because he also committed a genocide.

Wow.

Jamie Loftus (3:31)

Okay.

Robert Evans (3:32)

Maybe not the best way to talk about it, but we're talking about the Balkans this week and there's no easy way to lead into a story about the Balkans. If you are talking about the Balkans, you're talking about a lot of people dying. That's just history in the Balkans.

Yeah.

Jamie Loftus (3:46)

There's always a part of me that thinks someday you're going to come in hot with Saddam too. There's always just a little, like there's another novel that's been found.

Sophie (3:56)

They made another.

Robert Evans (3:59)

Saddam's lost novel like Tupac, he keeps dropping novels every 15 years after his death.

Sophie (4:06)

Yeah.

Jamie Loftus (4:06)

On the centennial, we're going to get a new romance novel. RIP Saddam, you would have loved the romantic trend going on right now.
