Star Wars. Star Wars.

Kari Byron (0:02)

Star Wars.

He was blushing, and he had that grin he gets after, like, one white Russian after a myth. You know where he's sort of like, that was our last time on location ever. You and I and Grant never came back after that day.

Tory Belleci (0:20)

They asked you to be Princess Leia.

Kari Byron (0:22)

And the show opens as Princess walks towards the camera, and it's Sophia Bush, who is...

Tory Belleci (0:30)

Oh! That's so cold! Yeah, we got somebody bigger.

Who are the Mythfits?

Kari Byron, Tory Belleci. Together more than 20 years having fun together.

Kari Byron (0:56)

Hey there, Mythfits!

Tory Belleci (0:58)

Welcome again.

Kari Byron (0:58)

Welcome back. This is going to be a very special episode. Do you remember in the old days when they said very special episode? I always meant like a long version of a rom-com tackling like an adult theme.

Tory Belleci (1:10)

Yeah.

Kari Byron (1:11)

This time it's just Star Wars.

Tory Belleci (1:14)

Those were some of like the most fun we had, because it's like two of our passions, right? Doing MythBusters and then testing myth from the movie Star Wars. But a lot of people gave us crap because they're like, that's not a real world. There's no real science there. You guys just making this stuff up. And it was like, yeah, I don't care. I'm having fun.

Kari Byron (1:33)

Grant was so excited. Adam was so excited because both of them have like closets of costumes for Star Wars.

Tory Belleci (1:40)

Solo costumes.

Kari Byron (1:42)

You were so excited. But Jamie and I were both taking ourselves way too seriously. Both of us were kind of on the side of the people that were giving us. I was like, how are we going to even test this? Like, is the gravity the same? Like, what are the materials that are on Endor? I mean, you don't even know the density of the tree. Like, I remember being a little-

Tory Belleci (2:00)

You were being a purist, which is weird because that's not usually like you.

Kari Byron (2:04)

I know. It took me a minute to jump into the fun of it. But once we got into it and I was just like, yeah, we're just making a TV show here. Like, this is not going to be a white paper. This is not going to be a research paper on whether Ewoks can achieve this destruction of a chicken walker.

It's just TV.

Tory Belleci (2:23)

But I feel like we gave, I feel like a lot of the fans really appreciated it. Because they were like, whatever, we get it. We know, you know, we're always testing movie myths. And it's always, you know, ridiculous stunts that happen. But this one, I feel like the fans were just like, yes, thank you.

Thank you for doing this for us.

Kari Byron (2:46)

There's a huge crossover between MythBuster fans and Star Wars and Star Trek fans. I feel like whenever we go to conventions, there was definitely a lot of Stormtroopers, a lot of Vulcan, a lot of...

Tory Belleci (2:57)

But there was a serious divide. It's like, because I remember the same thing we would say, you know, Star Wars, Star Trek. And then, you know, you would see how many people would cheer and there, you know, it's like the two rarely crossover except for at conventions. But it's like, if you're a diehard Star Wars fan, you're diehard Star Wars fan. You don't go into a Star Trek.

It's like two different types of people.

Kari Byron (3:24)

You don't walk the line. Grant walked the line. He had like all the costumes from Star Wars. He was a R2-D2 builder, but also like a reenactor of Star Trek. Like he practiced that eyebrow in the mirror when he was a kid until he could raise one eyebrow on his own.

Tory Belleci (3:46)

But you know what? The reason why we're talking about Star Wars, well, is because we're coming up on 1977 is when the movie came out. 50 years.

Holy shit, I'm old. Damn. I was giving myself.

Kari Byron (4:05)

Every single person right now that saw that as a kid, it's just like, oh, oh God. If you saw Star Wars as a kid, you also can probably predict the rain by your knees.

Tory Belleci (4:18)

50 years ago, and that-

Kari Byron (4:19)

50 years.

Tory Belleci (4:20)

I can't believe it.

Kari Byron (4:21)

It's still relevant.

Tory Belleci (4:22)

But what else is happening is Lucas just did the Lucas Museum of Narrative, and it's at the USC campus, and he just, it looks like a spaceship. He spent like one and a half billion dollars building this museum that's not just Star Wars. It's like, it showcases kind of the history of narrative artwork.
