OpenAI Files for IPO at $852 Billion (and Losing $1.22 Per Dollar)

Elon Musk Podcast

June 10, 2026

OpenAI confidentially filed for an IPO on May 22 and announced it publicly on June 8. The valuation: $852 billion. The catch: the company loses $1.22 for every dollar it earns, and internal documents project a $14 billion loss in 2026 with no path to profitability until 2029.

OpenAI has confidentially filed the paperwork for an initial public offering.

**SPEAKER_5** (1:34)
Yeah, and they aren't doing this alone. Anthropic recently filed the exact same confidential paperwork.

**SPEAKER_4** (1:39)
Right.

**SPEAKER_5** (1:41)
And SpaceX is preparing to go public too.

**SPEAKER_4** (1:43)
Yeah.

**SPEAKER_5** (1:43)
I mean, the valuations involved here are honestly difficult to fully process. You have OpenAI sitting at a valuation over $850 billion.

**SPEAKER_4** (1:53)
Which is massive.

**SPEAKER_5** (1:54)
Anthropic is nearing a trillion, right around $965 billion. And SpaceX is currently sitting at $1.25 trillion.

**SPEAKER_4** (2:01)
So between them, we are looking at three of the most highly valued private companies simultaneously eyeing the public market.

**SPEAKER_5** (2:09)
Right.

**SPEAKER_4** (2:09)
And the question that guides this entire conversation is, you know, how do you convince Wall Street to buy into a business that requires billions of dollars just to keep the servers running?

**SPEAKER_5** (2:18)
Yeah, because that friction point matters, whether you are an investor looking at these stocks or an enterprise buyer relying on these tools.

**SPEAKER_4** (2:26)
Exactly. Like, if you're a retail investor, your risk calculation is about to change completely.

**SPEAKER_5** (2:31)
And if you're an enterprise buyer, this shift from private to public alters the fundamental stability of the tools you use every day.

**SPEAKER_4** (2:40)
The mechanics of what just happened with OpenAI are structurally fascinating. They submitted an S-1 filing confidentially to the SEC.

**SPEAKER_5** (2:48)
And just for context, an S-1 is the mandatory financial document a company has to hand over to the government before going public.

**SPEAKER_4** (2:55)
Right. It's a massive disclosure.

**SPEAKER_5** (2:57)
Oh, yeah. It lists every financial risk, every cost, every operational vulnerability, every material contract. Exactly.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:04)
But they submitted this document behind closed doors and then immediately released a public statement announcing that they did it.

**SPEAKER_5** (3:10)
Which is such a contradiction.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:12)
Right. They essentially said, we expect the filing to leak, so we are just announcing it ourselves.

**SPEAKER_5** (3:18)
Yeah. Filing confidentially to keep your number secret while simultaneously broadcasting to the market that you filed, that is a very deliberate strategy.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:25)
Definitely.

**SPEAKER_5** (3:27)
There are structural reasons for handling it this way. Like filing confidentially starts the SEC review clock. The regulators get to look into the hood and scrutinize the math, but the company doesn't have to show its financials to competitors.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:39)
Right. It gives them room to iterate privately based on whatever feedback the SEC gives them.

**SPEAKER_5** (3:45)
They keep the option to withdraw without leaving a public footprint. Plus, they control the exact timing right up until a short required window before the roadshow.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:55)
Think of it like writing a brutally honest autobiography, but keeping the manuscript locked in a desk drawer. Yeah. Until you are absolutely certain the publisher will meet your price, they hold all the leverage while testing the waters.

**SPEAKER_5** (4:08)
Because the markets are pretty chaotic right now.

**SPEAKER_4** (4:10)
They are.

**SPEAKER_5** (4:10)
And filing confidentially preserves their optionality. They're trying to thread a tiny needle between taking advantage of a high valuation peak and protecting themselves from the extreme scrutiny of an open ledger.
