Around 1 a.m. on a hot summer night in 2004, a young taxi driver named Som Kiet drove through a remote area of Bangkok in Thailand. As he scanned around, looking for people on the sidewalk, looking for potential passengers, he was starting to feel pretty nervous because there weren't any, there was nobody out like looking for a ride.

Som Kiet, this is what he did for a living, and he knew that sometimes he'd have lots of fares, sometimes he wouldn't, and that's just how it went. But this week in particular, it had just been really difficult to get fares. It was like there was nobody out, and so he had no customers, and so he had made basically no money this week.

Unfortunately for Som Kiet, he didn't know if he could even make rent at this point. He literally needed one more fare. That's actually what he would need to push him into, okay, I can afford to live in my apartment still. So that's why he was out so late looking around, just trying to find anybody out here.

Also, keep in mind, the area of Bangkok where he was was not a particularly nice area. This is a sketchy area, but he had checked all the nice areas, nobody was there, and now he's here. He's so desperate. He's driving through the seedy part of town just in hopes of finding anybody.

But despite his willingness to take on all kinds here, he's driving around, he's driving around, he doesn't see anybody. And even though he knew he likely would not make rent now, he's like, I just got to pack it in and go home. Like there's nobody out here. I don't know why, but it is what it is.

And so he made a U-turn and he began leaving this section of Bangkok to head back home when up ahead, out of nowhere, there were these two girls, these two teenage girls just standing on the side of the road. And one of them had her arm up. She was waving down the taxi. And he's like, oh my goodness. Like one, I can't believe I didn't see them when I first came up here, but who cares? I got myself my last fare that I so desperately needed. Like it was worth it coming out here.
