Once We Were Spacemen

October 7, 2026

Mekia Cox doesn’t do anything halfway. Eight months after having a baby, she joined The Rookie and spent her first week sprinting after a stunt double and (literally) getting thrown by Nathan. She’s been going all out since age seven, when she started performing professionally.

They basically were like, what are you doing for the next year?

And I was just like, I was silent, because I was like, what do you mean? And he was like, because you will be dancing for Michael Jackson. And I have never had my knees collapse, but my knees just went out on me, and I sunk to the floor.

Alan Tudyk (0:33)

I tend to play weird people, usually aliens and robots and things that don't have romance.

Nathan Fillion (0:40)

I once didn't get a job where they were looking for a Nathan Fillion type. Once We Were Spacemen.

Alan Tudyk (0:48)

Once We Were Spacemen.

Hey, buddy. Hey, man.

Nathan Fillion (0:52)

What's up?

Alan Tudyk (0:54)

Not much.

You know, I'm doing a podcast with Nathan Fillion. It's pretty cool. I'm enjoying it.

Nathan Fillion (1:00)

Alan, you ever watch The Rookie?

Alan Tudyk (1:02)

Oh, the hairy guy that's with Han Solo.

Nathan Fillion (1:06)

That's The Wookie. Right now we're talking about... Have you ever seen The Rookie?

Alan Tudyk (1:10)

Right.

Like cakes, but harder. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_4 (1:14)

That's a cookie. I'm gonna get you there eventually.

Nathan Fillion (1:17)

You were on this show twice.

Alan Tudyk (1:21)

Oh, yes, you were there.

Nathan Fillion (1:24)

I totally was.

Alan, this job, I have always said Firefly was the best job I ever had. And it really was. Until The Rookie. And here's why.

Alan Tudyk (1:34)

Oh my God. What?

Yes, go on.

Nathan Fillion (1:38)

There was a couple of things that Firefly had going against it.

SPEAKER_4 (1:42)

We got kicked around a little bit by the networks and we got shifted around into some pretty difficult time slots.

Nathan Fillion (1:48)

We were really hoping people would watch. And it was a struggle with audiences and ratings. It was, it was, it was tough. There's tough times.

Alan Tudyk (1:55)

It's not how I remember it, but okay. Yeah.

Nathan Fillion (1:57)

There was.

I don't remember bitching about that for 25 years. I will tell you that Rookie has all the advantages of Firefly and none of the disadvantages. It's firing on all cylinders.

SPEAKER_4 (2:14)

Across the board, everything's great.

Nathan Fillion (2:17)

Yes. We have wonderful support from the network. We have incredible support from audiences.

SPEAKER_4 (2:22)

Our streamers are doing incredible.

Nathan Fillion (2:23)

I mean, I have never known success and happiness in a job the way I have with The Rookie. And a big, big part of that is the people that I work with. Among whom is the lovely Mekia Cox.

Alan Tudyk (2:40)

Aha!

That is the person we're talking to today. Correct.

Nathan Fillion (2:45)

Aha! My friend, she has talent abounds. Charm up the wazooze. And she kind of looks like she's been animated by Disney.

I agree.

Alan Tudyk (2:56)

And she can sing and she can dance. So this is something that Disney characters do.

SPEAKER_4 (3:01)

Singing, dancing, acting.

Nathan Fillion (3:02)

She's got it all. She's also really funny. Fun to be around.

SPEAKER_4 (3:06)

Alan, I can't wait for you to spend some time with them. All right.

Alan Tudyk (3:10)

Let's get in the ship, I guess, is what we do.

Nathan Fillion (3:17)

Ladies, gentlemen, listen. No, I'm not going to do it.

Alan Tudyk (3:19)

You're not going to do it? No, no, no.

SPEAKER_4 (3:21)

I was just going to see the look on your face and you were totally accepting. I wasn't prepared.

Alan Tudyk (3:26)

I was. Yes, and all the way.

SPEAKER_4 (3:28)

I know. And I was. I balked. Go.

Alan Tudyk (3:31)

Okay. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Once We Were Spacemen. Because once we were spacemen, and when we were spacemen, we prepared. We knew what we were going to do and knew what we were going to say. Unlike now, a piece of space garbage just floating through the universe, unaware of what the hell we're doing and saying, falling down the same hill week after week. The blood, the pain, with Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk.

Wow.

Nathan Fillion (4:09)

I'm starting to think those are different every week.

Alan Tudyk (4:12)

Yeah. I'm having trouble remembering what I did the last time.

Nathan Fillion (4:18)

Also, are there hills in space?

Alan Tudyk (4:20)

Buddy.

Nathan Fillion (4:21)

Is space uphill or down?

Alan Tudyk (4:23)

It is, well, it's mainly flat.

Nathan Fillion (4:27)

Listen, we could go on and on about this. We have other things to do, Alan. We have a cast.

Alan Tudyk (4:31)

Oh, yes. Of course we do.

Nathan Fillion (4:33)

Alan, have you ever met Mekia face to face? Alan, Mekia, Mekia, Alan. Hello, Mekia.
