The Daily AI Show
October 9, 2026
The episode opened with local AI. Google released a new application built around Embedding Gemma 2 that can capture and analyze meetings directly on a device rather than sending the entire conversation to the cloud.

Hey, what's going on, everybody? Welcome to The Daily AI Show. 10 a.m. on the East Coast, it is 7 a.m. on the West. It is October 9th, 2026, it's Friday.
And this is episode 830 today. So welcome to The Daily AI Show. We're glad you're here with me today, our Andy and Beth to kick things off. I'm Brian. And yeah, welcome guys. How are you? How's your Friday going so far? I think it's early for you, Andy, so it's just getting going.
Andy Halliday (0:27)
It's strangely very dark here. And then when it becomes daylight savings time, it won't be quite so dark, right? Is that the way that works?
Brian Maucere (0:39)
Yeah. Correct.
Andy Halliday (0:39)
Yeah.
Brian Maucere (0:40)
That's still a hell of a cut. It's at some point, hopefully they will finally do away and just keep it the way it is.
Andy Halliday (0:46)
I know it's bad for human health to do that switching. And yet there's a group of senators who are blocking the passage of what is Weirdly enough, we approved it in Florida, but you need federal approval.
Brian Maucere (1:00)
So like, it's approved in Florida, like we would do it.
I know it always comes back to kids dark in the school busses in the dark waiting for school, but like they're waiting in the dark anyway. As another new at AI, and it's gonna happen, and it's gonna annoy me, and I'm gonna be a grump about it when it gets dark here at like six o'clock in Tampa, just like most other people. Although I could be in the new, I could be in more northeast Beth. And I would imagine where you are in. back in Canada, that's got to get, I bet you that's like a 334 Twilight, isn't it? 430
Beth Lyons (1:33)
Yeah. In the real intense part?
Brian Maucere (1:36)
Yeah.
Beth Lyons (1:37)
Yeah. And it's really noticeable when it's you, right? Like, wow, you still have light?
Brian Maucere (1:48)
Yeah. What?
Beth Lyons (1:50)
What is happening?
Brian Maucere (1:52)
I will tell you quick and then we'll get into it. I promise everybody we're going to get into AI though. This is my quick story on that. When I was over in, we were living over in Europe for five months, and this is several years ago now, 2017 But my dad with my daughter was in first grade at the time, so she's seven. And my dad came over to surprise us and her right around Christmas. At that point, we were already into London, we'd gone on from Berlin and stuff like that. And anyway, it's that time of year, so the Twilight is coming. And earlier in the day, so we're out the door and this used to be my dad, he'd be up at six o'clock and out the door and the sun's coming up and we're hitting the city, like me and Amanda Sophia were going. And he'd say, we'll meet up with you around two. Two?
There's an hour and a half of light left it.
Unless you want to see everything in London in the dark, I mean, at Christmas it's pretty, but like, you know, so we would just have these like funny conversations like, like, well, we will be out and you come find us in the city, you know, but we have a seven year old and she needs as much light as possible. Like, we're not going out at two. We're not starting the day at two. So anyway, to all our folks around the world that are will have the earlier times as we at least for if you switch over. Yeah, I feel for you. I know I don't have it as bad as others living down here in Tampa. All right, so let's get into the AI news. And I'm going to pass it over to you guys because honestly, it's just been one of those head down warnings. So I have not had an opportunity to really read any of the trades that I normally do. So I'm a little out of the loop. Unfortunately, I'll try to catch up here. But what caught your guys eye?
Andy Halliday (3:32)
Well, I want to talk just quickly about a Google product release that leverages their Embedding Gemma 2 model. So yesterday, they released a new app that uses Embedding Gemma 2 That's the very small variant of Gemma 2 that can run on a local device. It's been optimized for Apple Silicon. So it works best on a Mac. But the on-device model has 740 million parameters and the app is a note-taking app like Otter and Fathom and Granola. So those apps are in widespread use. But now you have an app that comes directly from Google and works locally. So it is not running your meetings into the Cloud in order to provide that tracking. So which is, I think, going to be interesting and an important product promise for people who are doing a highly sensitive discussion that they don't want to have trafficking to the Cloud. So it will capture notes from meetings and in other apps. So it will actually look at everything that's going on on your desktop, I guess, and it analyzes in-person conversations. And like Granola, it has a split screen. Users can be typing notes on one side of the screen while the AI-generated notes are appearing on the other.
