G'day Noobers, welcome to today's Noob Spearo Podcast. It's great to have you along with us. Today we're headed over to Greece to interview Vasilis Koroneos. He's a man that's made a name for himself filming and editing some phenomenal spearfishing films on YouTube. He's got a channel that's called after his own name, Victoria, V Koroneos. But his entry this year, My Blue Mind came 2nd in the DPEC's Il Pescatore and Apnea competition this year. And he actually came 2nd to Sideris, the guy that won the Spearfishing World Champs over there in Greece this year. So he's big wraps on his editing. So get along and check out his videos as well when you get a chance. But we hear some awesome stories today. Learn a bit about sort of his mindset around sustainability. And we also hear a phenomenal story about a real battle of the wills for chasing down this amberjack. And he had several opportunities to hunt this fish. And we'll get to the story eventually.
And other news, 99 Tips to Get Better at Spearfishing. Our book on Amazon has been going phenomenally.
It's been bought in more than 10 countries now. And it's going really, it's performing really well. We're happy with our efforts. It took a long time to put together.
So it's good to see that sort of going well on there. And I really just wanted to reach out to you guys and say thanks for buying our book and leaving us reviews as well. It's going really well.
Dave Nichol over there in Spain, he reached out. He's just subscribed to the newsletter over on Noob Spearo. He loves the blog. He's got a lot out of some of our sort of guides and posts up there at noobspero.com. So thanks for reaching out, Dave. Really appreciate it. It's great to hear that some of the hard work we've done is making an impact on people's spearfishing. So, good stuff. Hope you're shooting heaps of fish, buddy. Right, without further ado, let's get into today's Noobspero Podcast interview with Vasilis Koroneos.
**SPEAKER_3** (2:27)
I wanted to share awesome experiences that you can have when you are in the water.
**SPEAKER_4** (2:35)
And that's why I started spearfishing.
**Vasilis Koroneos** (2:37)
I just clamped down on the reel and got drugged down to about 50 feet.
**SPEAKER_5** (2:41)
And I've never had a battle like that before in my life. When you're learning where to hunt and find fish, they're the hotspots. It's where fish want to be.
**SPEAKER_4** (2:47)
Don't overcomplicate your gear.
**Shrek** (2:49)
Don't go diving dressed up like a Christmas tree.
**SPEAKER_5** (2:53)
I actually started off in stubbies with a bloody belt with a pig knife on it.
**SPEAKER_3** (2:57)
And I've seen this big fin break the surface, roll into the water, look down, here's this nice big great one.
**SPEAKER_4** (3:03)
Once your face hits the water and you feel relaxed, then all the other stresses of life seem to disappear.
**SPEAKER_3** (3:07)
It's a whole new world and it's mysterious, it's magical.
**Turbo** (3:10)
It beats the shit out of knitting anyway.
**Vasilis Koroneos** (3:12)
Oh yeah.
**Turbo** (3:22)
Mate, great to have you on the show, Vasilis.
Mate, we'll get straight into it. Where did you start spearfishing, mate?
**Vasilis Koroneos** (3:29)
I started spearfishing in the island where I'm descended from, it's Kythera. It's in the south of Greece.
And I've been spearfishing for almost 30 years now.
**Turbo** (3:43)
So a lot of experience over there, mate. Tell us about the kind of diving that you do.
Kytheros?
**Vasilis Koroneos** (3:51)
It's the island where in the history, in ancient history, Venus was born.
**Turbo** (3:59)
We got a history lesson as well. That's pretty good.
**Shrek** (4:02)
Good interview already.
**Turbo** (4:03)
Mate, what sort of water depth are we looking at and clarity and what kind of fish do you hunt in Kythera?
**Vasilis Koroneos** (4:12)
Kythera is an island with very deep waters and the clarity of the waters is 30, 40 meters.
In good weather. The sort of fish are all the Mediterranean fish, groupers, brims, amberjacks, dendics, all these.
