Let me start where your portfolio lives. This Saturday, June 20th, NIO begins deliveries of the Championship Edition versions of the 2026 ET5, ET5 Touring, and EC6. Three products launching simultaneously on the same day. The Championship Editions start at 313,000 yuan, 3,000 yuan below last year's versions while arriving better equipped than their predecessors. Now, here's the context that matters for your portfolio. The 5566 lineup, ET5, ET5 Touring, ES6, EC6, it's been struggling. The four models combined for just 5,243 registrations in May 2026, down from 11,992 in May 2025, a 56.3% year-over-year decline. That's significant. The ES8 and the ES9 are carrying the entire NIO brand right now. The Championship Edition is NIO's answer to that problem. Refreshed, better equipped, and cheaper versions of the lineup that's been underperforming. The goal is to reignite demand in the mid-premium segment 298,000 to 373,000 yuan, while the ES8 and the ES9 dominate above 400,000 yuan. And William Li said something this week that got less attention than it deserved. He said making EV models lighter requires courage. Think about what that means in the context of the industry where everyone is racing to build the biggest, heaviest flagship SUV to chase margins.
Every Chinese brand launched a massive SUV this year. NIO was the one saying, we're also going to build lighter, more efficient vehicles. That's a differentiation statement, not just an engineering statement. William Li also said that China's pure electric vehicle penetration will reach Norway's 96% level eventually, and that he expects new electric vehicle penetration to hit 70% in China by Q3 2026
It made pure electric vehicles outsold combustion engine cars in China for the first time ever.
