Welcome to this very special episode of the Safety Third Podcast. I'm your host, Mark Rober, and our special guest today is Mr. B. Oh, yeah. And...
Kevin (0:13)
Cameraman John?
William Osman (0:15)
No, it's got to be something worse. What's like the most offensive, canceled YouTuber, but like in recent memory?
Tobuscus? Yeah, that's too dated.
Kevin (0:27)
Wait, sorry, I spaced out.
William Osman (0:29)
What was your question?
Kevin (0:30)
No, but he's controversial. He is controversial. Probably not with our audience.
William Osman (0:34)
Um, we're just coming up with fake names to introduce the podcast, to make it sound impressive.
Kevin (0:40)
You're Asmongold. He did a Nicado avocado thing where he actually cleaned up and he looked really good. And that's him right there.
William Osman (0:47)
Whoa.
Kevin (0:48)
Yeah.
Nigel Ng (0:49)
Hmm. Wait, I'm Asmongold?
Kevin (0:53)
Yeah, you're the glow up.
Nigel Ng (0:55)
Oh, damn. The most canceled person I think recently is Ed Sheeran, no?
William Osman (0:59)
Oh, yes. That's true. Yeah. We shouldn't talk about canceled people, or we're going to get ourselves canceled.
Honestly, dude, I have like no idea what's going on in the real world. I just do like science all day. And so I'll get like glimpses or someone will be like, have you heard of this? And I'm like, I know I haven't and I don't want to.
Nigel Ng (1:22)
I think the funniest thing is you do a whole episode on canceled people. You bring up all the people who've messed up. But then in order to have an opinion, you need to also weigh in on everything they've been canceled on. That's when your opinion, you get canceled for every single reason that all these people are having issues.
Kevin (1:43)
You cancel yourself 10 times at the same time.
William Osman (1:45)
I had this idea. I feel like this is a good idea and somebody should do it, is some sort of media surrounding canceled people, whether it's a podcast that is hosted by a canceled person and the guests are canceled people, or some sort of game show where it's just canceled people.
Kevin (2:06)
That's good.
William Osman (2:07)
But you'd have to draw the line somewhere of how bad was the cancellation, right?
Kevin (2:13)
Yeah.
William Osman (2:13)
I guess not. If they're not in jail, it's a fair game, right? The bar is pretty low if you're doing content and completely revolving around canceled people.
Kevin (2:21)
Yeah. I think that's good. That's the only way to do it, is if you only have canceled people on. Yeah.
William Osman (2:26)
Only canceled people.
Nigel Ng (2:28)
But the worst part is what if you have a bunch of really bad people? There's obviously the range of you get canceled because you say something that's a bit out of left field for your audience and they just reject you. But in another audience, you're acceptable. There are some people who got canceled because they-
Like people who've just actually done things that they should be a part of no group.
William Osman (2:53)
Well, then they're in jail.
Nigel Ng (2:55)
I'm saying borderline, it's the people who should be in jail, but somehow the- No, no, no.
William Osman (3:01)
If they're not in jail, it's fair game. If the law says that they're not such a danger to public, that we have to lock them up. Like if the law doesn't say that, then they can participate in whatever-
Nigel Ng (3:15)
You could be rehabilitating their image. Like they did something that-
William Osman (3:18)
No, no, no. No one's rehabilitating it. Listen, I'm not here to rehabilitate and cancel the group.
Kevin (3:25)
Do you even mention them being canceled on the show?
Or is that just the name of the show, Cancelled, and then you just- It's a normal game show. It's like either a normal game show.
William Osman (3:36)
I think like a podcast where they can talk about being canceled is like it's such, I don't even know what it is.
Kevin (3:42)
That humanizes them. They don't get a chance to defend themselves about everything.
William Osman (3:46)
Dude, wait, I actually don't know. I think-
Nigel Ng (3:49)
Actually, no, a better- I was going to say you go in, the canceled person goes in, and I don't know what you would have to do it. It's like a judge or somebody. You actually have to present your case to un-cancel yourself. The big risk is that you might get obliterated. Like people will actually mount a case against you, and you have to fight it. It gives you the opportunity in the court of public opinion.
