Our athletes are always looking at other sports to sharpen the main one. Check out Myles Garrett training with the rugby coach this off season. Take a look at this, guys.

Chad Johnson (0:13)

If I want to stop stepping the fence, the moment I start my front foot forward, I don't get to have my foot go first. You'll notice you're searching for ground, as if a sprinter was searching for ground, like that. We don't want to do that. We want to push. Good. Good shot. Because the moment I go to shift in, if I go foot first, you can feel the power disappear. If I go hip first, you're like off, pushing the back. Before the hip, shift. Shot. There's wind in me. You just shift the hip without searching for ground. It's really, really hard to pattern that.

See? That was really easy, hey, but you got to be snapping it. The knee will still come. Can we make it more about the hip before we get the knee?

You blame Shay for this? I'm talking to Shay.

Shannon Sharpe (1:04)

Myles Garrett must be don't like his money. Man, you talking to somebody like that, man?

Can you imagine the quarterback like that, Ocho?

Iso Joe Johnson (1:13)

No, because he wouldn't be able to play. He'll get fine. He'll get fine and he'll get suspended. I like what he's coaching, though. I like what he's teaching about your foot placement and leading with your hips and not your leg. Yeah, exactly. But also, you can't play right now anyway. You can't drive yourself through the quarterback. What he's teaching, he can't even do.

I don't think Myles Garrett really needs or has an issue with understanding how to tackle the quarterback, when that's one of the things that he does well.

Shannon Sharpe (1:42)

But most of the guys, they're talking to lead. But like you said, you can't launch anymore. You can't explode through a runner anymore. Because then you will end up landing on top of him, and then it goes like, well, you can other players, you can't do the quarterback like that.

Iso Joe Johnson (2:00)

Quarterback like that.

Shannon Sharpe (2:01)

That's the only player that Myles is going to be able to hit like that is the quarterback.

But the rugby thing, it teaches you more so what of how to tackle, use leverage, you know what I mean? Yes. So, I mean, for me, bro, I can appreciate a guy like Myles Garrett, who has every physical tool you can possibly have from a football player. And still trying to find different ways to add to his game, to be even better. You know what I mean? I think that's what the great ones do, Ocho, you know, they try to find different ways to stay on top, stay ahead of the game, to enhance whatever it is they already have. They're trying to find ways to enhance it even more. You know what I mean? So look, think about it, those little basic moves Buddy was showing them from rugby, man, they could probably help Myles Garrett get an extra sack or two throughout the season. You know what I mean? It's just a little small of my new things, bro, because the man already locked in. You know what I mean? Techniques.

Oh yeah. What other sports you use, Ocho, to get ready for football?

Iso Joe Johnson (3:07)

For me, it's soccer. Soccer was always my number one, Joe. I think for any sport in general, that's why I tell a lot of parents to put your kids in multiple sports when they're young, especially soccer. You got to include soccer because the most important foundation to play any sport is your footwork. When your footwork is on point, the rest of the body just follows.

You watch Kyrie Irvin, you watch some of these players, your Stephon Marbury, your Derrick Roses, or people that are really good with the ball in their hands and create separation and be able to take people one on one, your Steve Currys. The basic foundation to what makes them good and not the fact that they can shoot, it's the fact that they can create separation with their footwork. Everything starts from the waist down, your lower extremities. So soccer was my base, which is why my route running and ability to run full speed and be able to stop on a dime and get back to top speed in one or two steps. And I just, you know, that soccer just, it did wonders.

Shannon Sharpe (4:04)

I agree with Ocho. That soccer is great because first off, footwork, especially if you're a basketball player, soccer, if you start off, I'm talking about as a kid, four or five years old, I get to help you with your footwork throughout the game. That's what NAS started with. That's what NAS started with in Canada. But for me, Uncle Ocho, I used to do a little boxing training. You know what I mean? Not just the mitts, but the running of the stairs, the jump roping, the pushups, all different variations because, in basketball, bro, everything is about endurance. You know what I'm saying? You want to be able to sustain top level, your top level gameplay all the way through the fourth quarter. You know what I'm saying? That's why you see guys in the first quarter or the first half, they play great, but in the second half, they die down, maybe because they're just not in the type of shape to be able to continue and sustain that level of play throughout a full game. So I'll try to do anything I could, bro, to have not only longevity, but just to be in tip top shape during the season.
