Well, hello there, and welcome to the Talking Tennis WTA Power Ranking for Wimbledon 2026 The WTA Power Rankings are one of my favorite videos I do. Do it four times a year, and it's an opportunity to really highlight the stories to watch out for on the WTA, and who the title favorites are, and maybe expand the field a little bit. Now, I am recording this on the evening of Wednesday, June 24th. I had a power ranking ready to go before the start of playing Bad Homburg today.
And I thought, well, I'm just going to make, just, you know, not set in stone. Let's see what happens. And when I tell you the first and second seeds in Bad Homburg lost today, that should give you a clue as to why I've had to rearrange some things. And it doesn't make it easy that Wimbledon's actually probably got one of the widest WTA fields in terms of who could plausibly win it out of any of the four slams. And that's because grass is a very niche surface that requires a combination of elements that maybe very few players are all good at the same time. Wimbledon having the widest field of potential champions, and that comes from, if you look at recent history, three out of the last four kind of came from nowhere, seemingly, like Rybakina in 2022, before she became what she is now. Makhachev Androsheva, Babura Kojikova. Even Iga Swiatek last year was a little bit surprised given that she'd never won on grass before, won a tournament on grass before, and wasn't exactly in form for her. Although to be honest, I put her as fourth favorite in my power rankings, and had a sneaky suspicion she might do it. Just saying, but that's the point. And so I've been trying to create these as a means of trying to correctly identify players who could plausibly win Wimbledon based on the form they're in. And this is taking into account grass court form, as well as consistency throughout season. A key phrase you'll hear a lot is quarterfinals. This system is not based on how many titles someone won, but how many quarterfinals they reached. How consistently are they reaching quarterfinals on tour and going on these deeper runs? Because I think Wimbledon at the moment is rewarding consistent players, especially sort of halfway through the season where burnout's becoming a thing. But also, getting to quarterfinals of a grass court tournament means that you've got at least one or two wins under your belt, and that's going to help you a lot. Coming in with no wins is going to be a massive disadvantage. And what we're finding is a big chunk of the usual suspects are coming in with no or hardly any wins. So this might be one of the more out there power rankings I've done.
Before we get to that, I am going to give you what I would like to call the Marketa Fondrocheva hunt. And no, I don't mean literally looking for her, I've heard enough about her as it is, but more about trying to find someone like her who could plausibly be in form enough to win this tournament. So I'm just going to list some players until it gets me to the point where I think we can move on here. But yeah, effectively, there's going to be quite a few honorable mentions here. So yeah, honorable mentions, players to watch for, these are the ones that are like, there is a universe where they could win Wimbledon plausibly.
