My most remarkable Bigfoot sighting happened a year ago. This would have been May or June of last year. This would be in the South Oregon Coast Range within the Powers Ranger District.

I was camping at an area called Daphne Campground.

That's an area where I would stage at and then go to my research area, which was at Shrew Lake. What had happened this year is they had a whole bunch of rain, and so the road had been washed out, a really bad wash out, by the way.

And so I was with a friend, Gary, who's a logger in the area. He lives in Towers.

And he had stopped by and decided we were going to go and see if the road was opened up to get up to Shrew Lake that year. So we had jumped in his van and we went up. And this was, it was a sunny day. And if anyone's familiar with the Powers Ranger District, especially that that road 33 is the main Forest Service Road that runs through that Ranger District.

It's so deep. It's down at the bottom of the Gully and it gets really dark there.

You know, not doesn't get a whole lot of sunshine. Anyways, so we were driving up the road. And then we get off on the cutoff to go up to Shrew Lake. And it's a windy road. As you're going up the, you know, up to Shrew Lake. It's about four miles off the main road 33

We got up to the point where the landslide had been and it had been cleared out. So we were one of the first people in there that year, you know, at the springtime. After the winter, the winter, you know, is kind of dead there in that forest, you know, at the time. Anyways, so we were one of the first people in. And we were driving, driving up. Gary's driving. I'm sitting in passenger seat. This is early in the morning. So, you know, I'm still kind of waking up. And we, so that road is paved as you get up up to the Shulake Cutoff, which is for about four miles up the road. And then it's a dirt road that's windy and it's really rough. And especially if you're the first person in that year. So I'm riding in the van and we're driving up to Shulake. And it's a real windy road. It's a mountain logging road, if you've ever been on one.

And anyways, so we get up and then off the road is probably three miles, three or four miles till you get to Shulake campground itself. And it's not really a campground, it's a lake and then there's a vault toilet, probably ten camp spots around the road that goes into the lake. Anyways, so we decide we're going to go up further, you know, past the campground. He wanted me to see this place called Panther Ridge. And there had been a lot of Bigfoot activity. I hadn't been up there yet. So we're in this van. And by the way, he had just bought the van. So we're driving up the road and he starts to notice that his van is overheating. And you know, we're in steep roads, steep forest service roads on the Southern Coast Range. If anyone's been there, it's real thick. It's real in springtime, you know, anyways, we went up the steep road. Van starts heat, and we had bliver at one, and let the van kind of cool down. And then we went up a little bit further and it got worse. So we decide, hey, yeah, I'm telling them, hey, I don't want to break down up here, man. So we decided to turn back down. And so anyways, we're driving back down the road. And Gary says, well, let's pull into Shrew Lake and I'll grab some water and put it in the van. And by the way, he had just bought this van. I don't know if I mentioned it. So as you're going into Shrew Lake, and it's probably, I don't know, quarter mile, kind of a windy dirt road. And then you get into this day use area, which is just like a big gravel parking lot. Adjacent to Shrew Lake. And Shrew Lake itself, it's more like a pond, a big pond. It's not huge. It's probably an acre or so if that little lake is. And but anyways, as we've gotten so much rain that year, the lake had been flooded over. I mean, there's like a little observation area, the forest service had built that, it would have flooded up. So anyways, we pull a van in and we park, we park in that day use area.
