Hello everybody, and welcome to the SENWA radio studio. We're out here at Optus Stadium on this Monday morning in Perth. We are here thanks to Beaumont Homes. This is Mornings with Mark Duffield on SENWA. Now I know there's been a World Cup final overnight, but the two things that really caught my eye is that Ryan Fox is your British Open champion.
And I reckon that's a good result. I reckon Ryan Fox looks like a bloke who might enjoy himself in the wake of winning a British Open. And Ken Hinckley is the Tasmanian Devils' inaugural AFL coach. And that's pretty much being announced as we speak. So he has beaten Nathan Buckley to the job. He possibly beat John Longmire, although it's not clear just how seriously Longmire threw his hat into the ring. Hinckley, the man who took Port Adelaide into multiple preliminary finals over 13 seasons, but never a grand final, met with Devils officials at the weekend and made a full presentation. He made finals in seven of his 13th season at Port Adelaide. He had a winning record in nine of those seasons. And he had a knack of integrating young players into his senior team, something he did a number of times while being able to keep Port Adelaide relevant. And you would suspect that played a key role in the Devils board preferring him over Buckley.
The other key to Hinkley's appointment would be his ability to sell the club to the Tasmanian people. He's a big personality. You would expect the Tasmanian people will be keen buyers in a traditional footy state. And Hinkley's other gift, I think, is to act as a father figure, some would say even a grandfather figure, to young players, something he did very well at Port with players like Zach Butters, Jason Horne-Francis and Travis Boak. Now, this is a tough job as any startup operation is at an AFL club. You start with a lot of talent and unbridled optimism, but you only have to look at Richmond at the moment to understand that great young talent alone does not get it done at the AFL level.
Essendon's upset win over GWS at the weekend has sent Tigers back to the bottom of the ladder on percentage. It is difficult to see them climbing back to 17th with the Eagles at the MCG, their only realistic chance of pinching another win. You'd have to say the Eagles form in recent weeks has been much stronger than Richmond's. But back to Tasmania. It is easy to view this as a sound appointment. Hinkley may not have had ultimate success as a coach, but he is successful. A 57% winning record over 13 seasons is a rock-solid win-loss effort. And let's not forget when he took the job at Port, they were a basket case. They were coming off seasons under Matty Primus when they had finished 16th and 14th. They were playing in front of crowds at Foody Park that was so small, they had to put Tar Polans over entire banks of seats at the venue to try and concentrate the crowd into other parts of the ground and make it seem more populated. In his first season, he took the club into finals and they beat Collingwood in a final at the MCG that year in 2013
