Robinson's future revealed. I waited to drop this video, because Free Agency just started. I literally have no idea what update is going to drop next. So while I can, I want to speak about Mitchell Robinson, and the latest updates that we have about him. Shout out to Ian Bagley for giving us this following information. According to him, maybe Dolan is willing to go into the 2nd apron for Robinson this season. If he can get out of it next year, WFAN's Craig Carton said that Robinson's return to New York depends on Karl-Anthony Towns extension. Towns is extension-eligible on July 10th. If he accepts a lower salary than his 2027-2028 player option of $61 million, perhaps the Knicks can exceed the 2nd apron in 2026-2027 to resign Robinson and then dip under it once again in 2027-2028.
I want to make this clear because a lot of people, they get this point confused. Karl-Anthony Towns, he's officially signed for next season. He's on guaranteed money. There is no way him taking less will affect their cap for this season. However, like Bagley said, even though it won't affect their cap for this season, it will affect their cap for next season. So if they wanted to, they could resign Mitchell Robinson, go into the second apron. And then, if Karl-Anthony Towns takes a pay cut, which by the way, I believe he absolutely will, that pay cut would take into effect next season. And that means, whatever money he leaves on the table, that goes to Mitchell Robinson. And if that happens, maybe that's enough money where they stay out of the second apron for the second year. If James Dolan agrees to do that. But that's the main question, isn't it?
What is James Dolan's thoughts on this situation? Has he changed his mind? Does he want to go into the second apron only for one year, as long as they can get out of it the next year? Well, we have that update as well too.
Shout out to Ian Bagley for giving us this following information. According to him, as things currently stand, the Knicks team's salary is at roughly $213 million. They have 11 players under contract. The NBA's second apron and team's salary is $221.7 million. Knicks owner James Dolan said in an interview earlier this month that he did not want to exceed the second apron. It's unclear if that decision was made in concert with his front office or if it was purely a financial decision. Dolan did reiterate his stance on the second apron internally prior to the NBA draft. And what did he say?
He does not want to go into the second apron. So at least as of right now, it doesn't sound like James Dolan is ready to go into the second apron for any amount of time, even if it's only one year to go out of it the next year. It doesn't sound like he wants to do that.
So, if Dolan refuses to go into the second apron this season, even if New York can get out of it next season, what other options are on the table for New York? Well, we still cannot rule out a trade. And if New York makes a trade, they could potentially re-sign Mitchell Robinson. Take a look at this update. Once again, shout out to Ian Bagley for giving us this following information. According to him, if Dolan and The Knicks don't change their stance on the 2nd Apron, they would need to shed some salary, presumably by trading either Pacome Dottier, Tyler Kolek, or Miles McBride, maybe a combination of two of those players, in order to make Robinson a solid offer.
Honestly, the easiest thing for New York to do is to convince James Dolan that going to the second Apron, only for one season, to re-sign Mitchell Robinson, and then you automatically get out of that second Apron the next season, once Karl-Anthony Towns' extension begins, that's what I would do. That's the move to make, because as of right now, there really isn't another way to get Mitchell Robinson on this team, while keeping all of the players together on this roster. The only other way they could do it, like I just mentioned, is by making a trade. Trading Deuce McBride, Pecone Dottier, second round picks, and getting something back. I don't even know what New York could get for that trade package, but whatever they get, they're going to likely get a player, whatever picks, wave that player, and use that money to give it to Mitchell Robinson to re-sign him. That's another scenario that New York will absolutely explore. But, it's not the easiest way to go. Maybe New York wants to do that anyways.
