And now, let's get started.
McBride's value skyrocketing. Since the NBA finals ended, one of the questions that's been on my mind has been, what is Miles McBride's value right now?
He didn't have a great NBA postseason run for New York, other than that one game where he couldn't miss from three. But everyone knows, there's no denying it. Off the bench, he has a clear impact. Well, these latest reports from Bleacher Report have McBride's value skyrocketing.
Bleacher Report wrote the following article ranking the most underrated NBA players right now.
And Miles McBride, he's number five, middle of the pack on this list. Bleacher Report is confirming that he's an underrated star with the Knicks right now.
And the main reason that they're saying that, at least according to them, is because McBride, he's already exceeding expectations.
According to Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report, he states the following, Can a rotation regular on New York's first championship team in 53 years actually fly under the radar? That's just one of several ways in which Miles McBride defies the odds. For starters, he's a former second round pick who's about to suit up for his sixth NBA season. So he is already exceeding expectations there. He's also a six foot two, sub 200 pounder who isn't a primary playmaker, which might be the trickiest archetype to make work at this level. And yet, he is a valued member of this Knicks team.
Buckley continues here by stating, and honestly, maybe that's underselling it. As one opposing scout said of McBride in January, he's become a key for everything the Knicks do.
That's the kind of claim that highlights how McBride, while appreciated, isn't ranked highly enough. There's also this, in four of his five seasons, he's had better than a plus two net differential. Over the past two seasons, the Bokkers have been 5.4 points, better per 100 possessions, with him than without him. That's an enormous number, considering he's typically backing up one of the best quintets in basketball.
Miles McBride used to be known as a very scrappy defender, but now he's so much more than that. If your scouting report on McBride still sees him as a scrappy defender, he is that, but he is so much more. As of this past season, he's also a double digit scorer with a 41.3 three point percentage, and better than a three to one assist to turnover ratio.
Amazing numbers for Miles McBride.
It's amazing to hear that Miles McBride's value is so high right now, that it's skyrocketing right now. But unfortunately, that's what makes this next part so difficult to talk about. We know that Miles McBride is extension eligible, and if he's not extended, then it's likely he'll play next season in a contract year. With the New York Knicks, they only move in two directions. Either they'll pay you, extend you, and keep you on the team, or they'll attempt to pay you and reach a deal. And if they can't, then they'll end up trading you. We've already seen that a multitude of times with this team. We've seen it with Julius Randall, and we also saw it with Emmanuel quickly. New York has no problem making that move, even though they probably don't want to trade McBride at this point. They probably want to retain him and keep him on this team. But the main reason that they would trade him is because they do not want to pay him and get closer to that second apron. I mean, let's face it. Every move the Knicks have made this offseason had the second apron in mind. They did not want to go into it. They did not want to exceed it. They wanted to stay above it. And for right now, it looks like they have and they will continue to do so. But for next season, after they have to pay a number of other players, will they have enough money on the books to retain Miles McBride?
We don't know that information yet. It seems highly unlikely. And if the Knicks don't train Miles McBride this offseason, there's a possibility he could be moved near the trade deadline. Now I'm not saying for the Knicks to move Miles McBride. I think he's a very good piece off the bench. But, we also have to talk about this next reality. We see all of these younger players on the bench. Why are they there? To develop, get better, and in the future, be the bench pieces for that Knicks team. However, there's another reason to it. Their contracts. They're very low. They're cap friendly, especially for this Knicks team, looking to avoid the second apron. With Miles McBride, he is going to get paid. Whether that be from the Knicks or another team in the NBA. Ian Bagley mentioned this a few weeks ago. He said that if Miles McBride was going to get an extension, and it was from another team, he might make the full mid-level exception, which right now is $15 million per year. Would the Knicks pay that much to retain Miles McBride? I don't think so. We don't have any further details on what the Knicks will do with Miles McBride, at least at this point in time. But I gotta believe, in the next few weeks, we'll have that answer to this situation, whether McBride stays or unfortunately, he goes.
