Microsoft's Copilot Cowork Pricing Shift Signals a New Phase for Enterprise AI

Welcome to the Cloud Wars Agent and Copilot Minute, where we explore the opportunities, impacts and outcomes made possible by AI. Now, Microsoft is moving Copilot Cowork from a fixed price subscription model to usage-based pricing. And this is really reflecting the fact that heavy users are racking up massive compute costs compared to others. That's because agentic AI just doesn't operate like traditional software. And that in itself is a story. It's very much a reflection of how the industry is continually having to adjust to the requirements of the AI era, and how cost is emerging as a really critical factor to success. The early phase of enterprise AI was really about proving what the technology could do. But more and more the focus is shifting to how organizations can scale those capabilities in a way that's financially stable.
But beyond that, Microsoft does also say that it's considering a Microsoft hosted version of DeepSeek as a lower cost model alternative. Right now, at the moment, Copilot Cowork workloads are powered by models from OpenAI and Anthropic. We should expect here from Microsoft regarding DeepSeek or another low cost model choice within the coming weeks.
So what we're really seeing here, well, Microsoft's AI strategy is evolving beyond simply offering access to the most powerful models.
Increasingly, it's about giving customers the right balance of performance, of economics, and of choice. And this is also highlighting for me a big divide between how governments and businesses view the AI race. I'm not going to call it a growing divide, but it's certainly a divide that's emerging. Governments often frame this AI race as a competition between nations, but enterprises are more likely to focus on which models deliver the best outcomes at the lowest cost for their customers. And as AI agents become more widely used, this focus on economics may matter just as much as model quality. Thank you for watching.
