Hey, my name is Matthew McConaughey, and I feel very Irish about being Conan O'Brien's friend.
Conan O'Brien (0:09)
That's an insult, but I'll take it.
Woody Harrelson (0:14)
Hi, my name is Woody Harrelson, and I feel like a true American about being on Conan O'Brien's.
Matt Gourley (0:20)
You are a true American.
Conan O'Brien (0:21)
I know you and I align in many of our views.
Matthew McConaughey (0:24)
One of our great patriots.
Conan O'Brien (0:47)
Hey there, it's Conan O'Brien. This is Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend, the podcast that I think brings joy and beauty to every single person on the planet Earth.
Matt Gourley (0:57)
This podcast brings beauty?
Matthew McConaughey (0:58)
I know, beauty is the one I-
Conan O'Brien (1:00)
I also said to every single person on Earth, which is maybe a slight exaggeration. I'm joined by my good chum, Sonamah Sessian. Hey, Sona.
Matthew McConaughey (1:07)
Hi.
Conan O'Brien (1:07)
Matt Gorley. Hi. Dr. Gorley, good to see you. And I'm told that our techno-wizard, audiophile extraordinaire, Eduardo has a little something he wants to say. Eduardo, what's going on?
Eduardo Perez (1:19)
I do, I have a gift for you, actually.
I don't know if you're going to like it or not. But just to give you context, when we first built the studio and we were debating on what mics to have, the table, everything, the walls, what it would look like. One of the things I had thought about at that time was getting you a microphone that you had for your TBS show Conan. Do you remember that mic?
Conan O'Brien (1:39)
Yeah, beautiful mic. I think it has certain kind of, was it red?
Eduardo Perez (1:43)
Yes.
Conan O'Brien (1:44)
Yeah, beautiful red microphone. Oh, there it is. There I am with Seth Rogen.
Matt Gourley (1:48)
Oh, is that a ribbon mic?
Eduardo Perez (1:50)
That's a condenser mic.
Conan O'Brien (1:51)
I knew it.
Eduardo Perez (1:52)
Yes, it's a 414 and anyhow, so it's a very cool looking mic.
Conan O'Brien (1:57)
I always loved the look of that mic and I just love, and I love that little shot of dark, dark red.
Eduardo Perez (2:04)
It was so cool.
Conan O'Brien (2:05)
But like it was also kind of unnecessary, right?
Matt Gourley (2:08)
Yeah, I always wondered about that too. How much of that is for show?
Conan O'Brien (2:11)
No, we've discussed that before that I would always say, why do we have a mic on the desk? Now a lot of it's just an aesthetic nod to the early days of television, the early shows, talk shows, that were really invented in America. Steve Allen, Jack Parr, Johnny Carson, David Letterman. I think I've named all the hosts.
They all have a microphone on the desk because that's what you had to do then. Subsequently, you've got all these boom mics hanging. Everyone's got a lavalier clipped to them with a mic pack. And the thought was sometimes I'd say, why do we have this? I get that it's an aesthetic nod to the past, but is it unnecessary? Turns out they would always tell me sometimes the mics go out and we need to switch over to that mic that's on your desk, which they did a couple of times. So they have a use and they look cool.
Eduardo Perez (3:06)
That one specifically looked cool because of the red grill that you were talking about. That was custom made. So I thought, oh, it'd be cool to use that one for you here. And I tried to track it down. I went to Skills one of your long time.
Conan O'Brien (3:18)
Yep, Skills is my guitar tech for many, many years.
Matthew McConaughey (3:21)
Worked on the show.
Matt Gourley (3:22)
It took me a while to wrap my head around the fact that you have people working for you named Skills and Chills.
Conan O'Brien (3:29)
Yeah, exactly.
Matthew McConaughey (3:30)
But anyhow, so the- I'm going by Thrills for now.
Conan O'Brien (3:34)
Hey, Thrills.
Eduardo Perez (3:34)
Nobody could locate the mic. So even to this day, I don't know-
Conan O'Brien (3:38)
I don't know where it is either.
Eduardo Perez (3:39)
So what I did was I was able to get it recreated.
Matthew McConaughey (3:43)
What? That's what I got here.
Conan O'Brien (3:47)
Wait a minute.
Eduardo Perez (3:47)
This is huge. You can open it if you like.
Matthew McConaughey (3:51)
Wait a minute.
Matt Gourley (3:51)
This is from all of us, by the way.
Conan O'Brien (3:55)
Oh, that old move. Wait a minute. Is this for real?
