Welcome back to Marketing With Purpose, a segment of the Bliss Business Podcast, where we explore what it really takes for marketing leaders to create an impact that goes beyond the numbers. I'm Tullio, and in each episode, we sit down with marketing experts to explore their leadership approach to and strategies that drive performance and resonate with their audience. Together, we'll dive into what's working, what's not, and how purpose and empathy can transform the way brands connect with people. So let's get started. Today, I'm joined by Mike Martin, who's the co-founder of Replay Sports Cards, and a former ESPN SportsCenter Graphics Segment Producer, who helped launch the company's first store in Charlotte in 2021, before expanding across the Southeast and leading the brand's franchise launch. Focused on building, welcoming, community-centered experiences, Mike has helped Replay evolve beyond the traditional art shop model by blending in store retail, live streaming, digital engagement and community building into one connected customer experience.
Through initiatives like Replay Gives Back and monthly in-store trade nights, he continues to emphasize the power of authentic connection in modern retail. We're going to explore why human connection still wins in a data-driven retail world.
I'm excited to dive into how community, storytelling and experience continue to shape the future of retail. It's great to have you with us, Mike.
**Mike Martin** (1:59)
Thank you for having me. I appreciate it.

Before we dive into our conversation, I'd love to hear why human connection still wins in a data-driven retail world. The topic you chose to explore with us today. Why is that so relevant today, you think?
**Mike Martin** (2:15)
Yeah, I mean, it's really been the pillar of what Replay Sports Cards is since our inception. So we launched our first shop in March of 2021, so five years ago, and that was during COVID, right? So a lot of people were going from brick and mortar on to online.
For us, with the card hobby, the sports card hobby, we saw a meaning for the personal connection, right? Everyone was itching to get back to hold the card in their hand, to trade with their friends in the community. So when I moved to Charlotte, there really wasn't a shop that was able to do that, that had the space to sit down, hang out, and just enjoy the hobby that is sports cards. So I think a lot of shops are moving towards more of an AI, and scan your card at the kiosk, and that's how much we'll pay you, where the in-person one-on-one negotiations and interactions, it's priceless and you can only get that in-person. It means everything to me. We still do a ton of AI and the data-driven stuff on the backend to make sure we're running smoothly, but customer-facing, we want to make sure everything is so personable. So that's a big pillar and one of the most important things we do at Replay.
**Tullio Siragusa** (3:33)
Nice. Hey, look, haggling that whole game back and forth. That's part of the fun.
Take away the fun.
**Mike Martin** (3:41)
Yeah.
**Tullio Siragusa** (3:41)
Now, CMOs, Heads of Marketing, they're often pulled between near-term campaign results and long-term brand building. It's always this big balance, right? So how do you ensure that your marketing strategy stay aligned with the company's growth goals?
Where do you find the biggest friction points in making that happen?
**Mike Martin** (4:04)
Yeah. I mean, for us, we really, almost everything we do is long-term. So our revenue goals, our sales goals, our marketing strategy, everything is for the long-term. For me, I see again, we're not in it for the pump and dump, the flipping aspect of it. A lot of the pillars we have at Replay are community through cards. That's our mission statement. It's what we live, sleep, eat, and breathe.
So the only way we can do that is by doing it long-term, getting an extra dollar here and there on a card, or creating a marketing campaign around, you've got to have this product, it's the product of the year. That doesn't resonate with your collectors, and that's who we're focused on connecting with. We definitely serve the people that are investing in the space and wanting to buy cards to flip them. That is definitely a part of the hobby, and it's really healthy, and we love seeing that. But we really connect most with the collectors. Whether it be our sale prices, or what we'll buy a card for if we're giving a deal, because for me, it's not the one-time transaction with our customer, it's having them see Replay as their local card shop forever.
