Let's move on to Four Thoughts on Sport to get us rolling this morning. First thought is on the Essendon Bombers and their upset victory over GWS yesterday at Marvel Stadium.
Make no mistake, whether you love the Bombers or hate them, this is a good thing for footy, and the joy on the faces of the few Essendon fans in the stands at Marvel should tell you that. This has been a club on its knees. They lost their best young player, Nate Caddy, to an elevated heart rate, but others stood up and got this done for them. Keep a close watch on Sullivan Roby in the next year or so.
Boy, does he look like a player. Second thought is on the team they beat GWS and the other AFL expansion project team, the Gold Coast Suns. The Giants kicked so badly for goal yesterday under the roof at Marvel, they would have missed water falling out of a boat, and at the end of the day, that has cost them this game.
This loss may well be the one that cost them a wild card birth. It is very hard to get a line on a team that can beat Freemantle, Geelong and Melbourne, but can't beat West Coast or Essendon.
Gold Coast loss on the other hand was the club's eighth in a row, and they're quite simply better than this. Something is badly wrong here, and the AFL will want them to get the bottom of it quickly. Third thought is on Freemantle, the 16th win for the season over Port.
I have to say, they look flat and sluggish for much of it. They got jumped early, they fought back, they took control of the game. They won doing enough without doing much more than enough. I'm not sure Justin Longmuir will be liking their center square work. It's been hit and miss for a few weeks now, and the Young Power mids clobbered them for significant periods of this match. And finally, Fourth Thought on West Coast. More competitive, Jake Waterman kicking straight, Job Shanahan remains a threat. They were competitive, but they do have an unfortunate habit of turning opportunities with the ball to hurt an opponent into needless turnovers that allow an opponent to hurt them. I'm tipping the Derby on Friday will be a contest and closer than many think, but the Dockers will still start clear favorites. 487 736 736 That is your text line.
