That happens in September, but you can establish premiership credentials every time you step out and play. And the best thing about Freemantle season so far is the way they have gone about doing that. They have blown a team off the park by 124 points against North Melbourne. They've pipped Collingwood at the post in Adelaide despite not being at their best in the wet. They survived a comeback and a scare against Adelaide and many scares against Brisbane, the Bulldogs and Carlton. They have produced powerful late surges to beat Hawthorne and St Kilda. But I reckon the 9-point win over Geelong on Thursday will give them as much belief as any win so far this season. Because for half a game, this looked like a game that could get away through poor kicking. The Cats had been the one team to beat the Dockers this year in Round 1 at GMHBA Stadium. So despite them coming without Tom Stewart and Bailey Smith, they came with psychological ammunition. And it did look like the Dockers had some doubts weighing on their mind in the first half where at one point they kicked nine points to fall 28 points behind the Cats with their 12-game winning streak seemingly on the rocks. It would have rattled most teams and it certainly would have rattled Friot teams in the past. But they hit back hard with late second quarter goals and then they dominated the third term to put themselves in the driver's seat for a 13th straight win.
Their goal-kicking was hit and miss all night, and they finished the match with the same number of goals and nine more points than the Cats. Now, we tend to listen to pretty much everything Lee Matthews tells us about our game. And one thing he often says is that accuracy in front of goal is the most underrated stat in footy and arguably the most important. So Friot had an off night in a critical area against a very good opponent, and they still came away with the win. There are always dozens of reasons why games are won and lost, but there were four key figures in this one. Luke Jackson is called the Unicorn because he is unique, but he's never looked more unique than he looked on Thursday night. So ruck work, clearances, possessions, marks, and goals. He gives the dockers the extra mid opponents can't go with, he gives them the extra marking target in attack, opponents find very difficult to match up on. People have questioned Andrew Brayshaw's place in the Dockers' engine room this year purely because of the weight of talent around him. But I suspect Brayshaw's football for Freo is the most valuable it has been since his MVP season in 2022 Brayshaw had 35 disposals with four clearances and seven tackles against the Cats.
He had 16 in Freemantle's dominant third quarter. But he also had seven score involvements and six intercept possessions, and he had a couple of other intercept efforts which would not have made it onto the stat sheet as possessions. Brayshaw's point of difference in this team is as vital as the silky skills of the teammates around him. He is the team's best two-way runner. He is the team's defensive point of difference in the midfield.
