Now let's be moving on to Four Thoughts on Sport to get us rolling this morning.
Thought One is on disappointing team in 2026, number one. And who else but the Gold Coast Suns? Not just beaten, but absolutely clobbered by Adelaide in Adelaide. Gold Coast have gone from being one of the AFL's most exciting outfits to its most underwhelming this season. They have one of the AFL's best midfields on paper, and that midfield got clobbered again by Adelaide. I'm not sure it helps the team, which is trying to convince players like Mac Andrew not to argue with umpires and concede silly goals, when we see coach Damian Hardwick arguing with idiot spectators on the way out to the three quarter time huddle. Thought Two is on disappointing team number two.
It's no surprise that Essendon were beaten by Brisbane. It's no surprise that the margin blew out. But the bombers have let club standards slip so much that sometimes easy footy skills are the ones letting them down. Short handballs that hit the grass, short kicks that missed the target by metres. So at the end of the day, good footy is built on fundamentals at all levels. Essendon's club leaders, not just the ones on the field, but also off the field, have not driven high enough standards. Thought 3 is on Geelong.
Are the AFL's perennial finalists in trouble and in danger of missing everything? And that means the wild card round. They now have Jeremy Cameron, sorry, gone with a shoulder concern.
They couldn't hold a six goal lead against GWS. And the bugbear that's occasionally left the cats short of the mark, the lack of a gun ruckman, bit them again against the giants with Kieran Briggs, the dominant big man on the ground. And let's face it, Kieran Briggs ain't Max Gorn. Thought 4 is on Freemantle's next opponent, Port Adelaide. So no Zach Butters, gone to ankle surgery. No Jason Horn Francis at this stage, lost to suspension. No Mitch Georgiardis lost to the concussion protocols. Of course, no Connor Rosie from early on in the season. Now normally, a trip to play Adelaide Oval, to play Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval spells danger. This week's trip looks a lot less dangerous for Freemantle now.
