Let's get on to Four Thoughts on Sport to get us rolling this morning. And let's talk about Bathurst. The Great Race always gives us plenty of drama, but it has rarely given us more than this one. For much of it, Brody Kosteki looked in complete control of the race. Then came that pit stop, and the drama replacing a right front brake. And then it appeared he would have trouble even making it on to the top three podium.
But he drove brilliantly to put himself in position, and then came the drama of the last four laps. Chad Mostert hit the fence, the safety car came out, the field closed up at the restart, and then Anthony DiPasquale ran out of fuel. Extraordinary stuff in front of 204,000 people who attended the event over the weekend on the hill at Bathurst. Fight 2 is on Carlton. We'll be talking to Fox Sports' Will Faulkner a little bit later in the show, and it wouldn't be an AFL off season if there weren't a couple of off-field dramas involving players. So, Lockie Cowan was rushed to hospital suffering from an undisclosed condition after paramedics were called to a party at 5:30 AM.
Appears nothing good happens in the AFL at 5:30 AM. Remember the Pullman. Teammate Will Hayward also admitted himself to hospital. The club stressing this was a separate event after a fall in his bathroom.
The question for the AFL. If they are reserving the right to suspend Sydney players after events at the Pullman Hotel, and while the suspensions that were in place at the end of the season were club suspensions, the AFL is still reserving the right to take actions.
How deeply will they investigate the circumstances of Cowan's hospitalisation in particular, with the strong whiff of illicit drug use about this one? Thought three, and speaking of off-field misadventure, we're all wondering how Sydney would reintegrate the Pullman Five back into their footy program. Now it looks like Nick Blakey is refusing to be reintegrated. If I was Sydney, I wouldn't be letting Blakey go unless it's a deal that suits them.
They owe him nothing. He owes them plenty. I'm not sure that wanting out of a club after letting them down so badly looks great on Blakey's resume. This will be the most intriguing trade of the last few days of this trade period. And finally, Thought 4 is on Nick Maddinson, who has made his way to 17 in Australia's second innings in the Test in Durban. Now, when we bag the selectors for picking Nick, we are not bagging Nick himself. And he has a chance in front of him to play himself into this Australian team on a more permanent basis when play resumes this afternoon, our time. He is hoping he grabs the chance. He will save a lot of red faces on the Australian selection panel if he makes a good fist to things, the Savo runs or no runs. It will not change the fact that his selection in this game represented an absolute absence of proper process by the selectors. Give us your thoughts and questions. 487 736 736 That is the text line. 1312 55 is the Barra and Doday open line. Barra and Doday because the little things are everything. After the break, we'll be talking to Fox Footies, Will Faulkner about AFL Trades and Carlton. Made in WA for WA. This is Mornings with Mark Duffield on SENWA.
