My name is Matt Gottesman, at Matt Gottesman on Instagram, and this is my daily podcast where I create short, quick hitting episodes to help you uncomplicate life, creativity, and the pursuit of your highest self. There's only main character energy here. Now let's get into it.
Welcome to episode 817, Make the Thing Only You Can Make. The audience for that is already waiting.
And it's really the basis and the thesis behind The Niche Is You.
It doesn't matter what industry you go into. It doesn't matter what path you take that, quote unquote, it's been done before. Your path is your path. And you come with a very unique perspective within that path and for that specific skill set or industry or perspective, right? It's perspective building, it's world building. And so your specificity isn't a limitation. It's actually why people would be searching for you. It's what makes you different in the things that you do. And I think often at times what happens is people say, oh, like, look at how those people are doing that. That must be the only way to success or that. And you could almost even talk yourself out of an industry because you're like, oh, but I don't want to do it that way. And that's where the success is. And it's like, well, no. The idea is, you know, if you're called to an industry, it doesn't matter how others are doing it. It's how you would change it. It's how you would do something differently. And that's what you're equipped with. That's what God gave you, right? And we don't always have to understand it right away. We just have to act on it, right? So in this episode, I want to talk about why the most overlooked competitive advantage is the thing that makes you specifically you, The Niche Is You, right? And how trying to make what's already been made is the slowest path to obscurity.
Even if you look at how something is done in like any given path, art or business or anything, right? Because I'm just saying you can even take something and do it even wildly better, right? So I mean, Michael Jackson was gifted for that. I mean, I know there's a lot of talking about him right now because of the biopic movie that came out. And they were talking about how he learned from several artists. And learned how to perfect it and take that, you know, that maybe dance move or that step or just movement in general and expand it, right? And so you don't want to just do what's been made. You want to either expand something or give it a whole new meaning, a whole new depth or perspective. I also want to talk about why your unique combination of experiences, perspectives and gifts is the actual asset. So if you feel like you're behind or if you feel like you've gone on all these detours, you've done so many different things, maybe actually there's a through line in them that are supposed to be pieced together to create what you're here to create. I also want to talk about how there's already an audience searching for what only you can offer, and you don't think it. And I know it, I get it, because you're like, also because a lot of times things have been created for mass production. Well, if millions and millions of people don't need this car, or this supplement, or this thing, or this anything, right, this widget, then therefore it must be a failure. It's like, well, no, there's a market for nearly everything, nearly everything, and especially a way that you deliver it.
And so as soon as I get people who ask for mentorship about that, we're in some of my communities, when we talk about that, you'd be surprised, out of billions of people, are there at least thousands that need what you do? And they're like, yeah, and I'm like, welcome to business. And that's it. Also, I want to talk about why most creators settle for generic work because specific work may feel riskier. And I don't just, when I say creators, I mean, just any of you that are trying to create your own path or do something differently, right? Generic work is sometimes easy to settle for because we kind of know the outcome. And sometimes specific work may feel risky. You're like, oh, I want to do this specific thing within that industry. It's like, oh, but like, for example, I learned in MBA school just because you can doesn't mean you should. And the idea was that just because you have the skill sets of the wherewithal to do these different areas within a business doesn't mean that you should do all of them. Maybe you should just do the things that are the most called and the most in your flow state for, right? Of course, MBA school didn't use flow state. But once someone talks about what happens when you finally trust what makes you different is actually what's needed. So let's just jump right in. There's a version of the work that only you can make. And I think it's the combination of your story, your perspective, your gifts, your wounds, your wisdom, your voice, the intersection of everything you've lived through and everything God built in you, right? That work exists. And I believe it's actually been forming inside of you for a lot longer than you probably realize, right? So there's an audience already waiting for you on that. But I think that that's something that you have to kind of start doing some self-reflection.
