Major update on Karl-Anthony Towns' extension. We've been so focused on free agency and the Knicks making trades that we've all but forgotten the biggest extension the Knicks need to give out this off season. Karl-Anthony Towns' extension. I recently asked NBA Insider with the Athletic, James L. Edwards, for more information about this extension. And I received the following information. Take a look.
I asked NBA Insider, James L. Edwards, the following question.
Does Karl-Anthony Towns get an extension with The Knicks? If yes, how much will that extension be for?
And according to Edwards, he gives us this following information. My educated guess is that New York will offer Towns an extension. The question is, will The Knicks offer him the max deal that they can offer him? Four years, $272 million. That's where I paused slightly. Towns came here and within two years, helped New York reach its first Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in a quarter century, then turned around and helped the franchise end the 53-year championship drought. He's done his part. But here's the thing. If Karl-Anthony Towns wants to stay with The Knicks, he needs to take less.
If he doesn't, there's a possibility he could be moved. Take a look at these updates. Edwards continues here by stating, Now the reason I paused at Towns is 30 years old and big men don't tend to age well, an extension would carry him past his prime. The Knicks under Leon Rose have shown a willingness to be flexible. Jalen Brunson will surely get an extension when the time comes. OG Ananobe still has 3 years left on his deal. Mikael Bridges starts his 4 year contract this season. Josh Hart will be extension eligible later this summer. At some point, it feels like something has to give. Would New York really have this core locked in for another 3, or maybe even 4 years? That seems unlikely. There's a world where Towns is the odd man out unless he takes significantly less than the max extension. That means to me, if Karl-Anthony Towns doesn't agree to take less in his upcoming extension, then potentially, the Knicks could move him or trade him because he's not willing to take less.
But Edwards continues here by stating, However, if your Towns and help bring success to the Knicks and are soon to be on the other side of 30, why do that? It's hard for me to predict what Towns extension will be. But if the two sides did agree to one, I'd be a bit surprised if it were for the max contract that he could sign.
Jalen Brunson took less. Mikael Bridges took less. I believe without a doubt that Karl-Anthony Towns, he will take less too. To help this Knicks roster stay competitive for future seasons. Because right now, the Knicks just won a championship. Karl-Anthony Towns understands, in order to win multiple championships, you need to make sacrifices. You need to have cap flexibility in order to sign other players or even make trades. And because Towns knows that, I believe he will take less. But let's listen to this as well.
Karl-Anthony Towns, before he was even traded to The Knicks, he was asked by Shannon Sharp on his show, would he take less like Jalen Brunson, in order to keep the core group together in Minnesota. And you know what he said? He said he would do that. He said he would take less. And the Wolves didn't even win a championship at that point in time. The Knicks right now are coming off a championship season. Why wouldn't Karl-Anthony Towns take less, to ensure that this core can stay together for multiple seasons. To help the Knicks and Leon Rose make multiple moves, to help this team stay competitive. Because at the end of the day, that's what it comes down to. Continuing to build a very competitive team, in an Eastern Conference that just got even better. Karl-Anthony Towns knows that. He's not blind. He sees all the moves that other teams are making, because of how dominant the Knicks were. Towns understands that. He's a leader on this team, a leader in the locker room. And when you know that, when you know you have influence in a franchise, and you help them just win a chip, it's up to you to make that sacrifice, to help the team get better.
