Steven Scott (0:01)

Oh, hello, welcome along to another episode of Double Tap today. Emails, and I mean it.

SPEAKER_2 (0:10)

This is Double Tap, where blind people talk tech. Here's Steven Scott and Shaun Preece.

Steven Scott (0:18)

Welcome to another day of this. Hi, Shaun.

Shaun Preece (0:22)

Oh, wow.

OK. I mean, high expectations there. Yes. Hello, Steven. You OK?

Steven Scott (0:28)

Someone asked me recently when I was at the RNIB event. They said, you know, what do you attribute to the success of Double Tap? And I said, low expectations.

Shaun Preece (0:36)

Oh.

Steven Scott (0:36)

And they were rather shocked by the answer, but I think it was an accurate one.

Shaun Preece (0:39)

You could have just said Shaun. I mean, same thing, arguably.

Steven Scott (0:42)

Same thing, really. I think it just explains it more.

Yeah, we're going to get into emails today. I've got to say, though, right, so I mentioned on social media yesterday, I do this regularly. I like to put out my advice to the world. I know no one cares what I think, and that is absolutely fine, but I like to put my views out there on to social media. Or as I was thinking about this this morning over my morning coffee, I'd love to start a social network called Splat.

Shaun Preece (1:11)

Oh, okay. You sure that doesn't already exist?

Steven Scott (1:15)

Oh, it might well do, but I don't care. I'm going to develop it right here, right now. Splat, where basically everyone's opinions are just Splat on a wall.

SPEAKER_2 (1:23)

That is social media.

Steven Scott (1:24)

I know it is, but we like to kind of almost treat it with such reverence these days. Well, do they?

Shaun Preece (1:30)

Who? I mean, okay, let's get to the point. What did you Splat that you shouldn't have Splatted?

Steven Scott (1:36)

What was my Splat? Well, I will tell you, see, that's going to catch on. What did you Splat today? That's going to catch on.

So I mentioned, as I do every year, my reminder not to go and download the iOS 27 or Mac OS 27 or TV OS 27 or any other OS 27 you can find.

Shaun Preece (1:57)

You're such a party pooper.

Steven Scott (2:00)

I know. I'm such a, what was it someone called me? Someone said I was being like protectionist or something, like, you know, what was the word?

Basically telling people what to do. And I'm like, if you've spent any time listening to what I've done in this show over the last 10 years, I've told you repeatedly, think for yourself. I'm giving you advice, you can use it or not. I don't care.

Shaun Preece (2:20)

Are you telling me to think for myself? Are you telling me what to do?

Steven Scott (2:23)

I'm telling you. Yeah, exactly. Oh, goodness. I watched a show last night. It was exactly like someone like you on there. It was just like, you know, everything you told them to do, they just did the opposite. It was like, oh, Wiveswap UK, you go on YouTube and check out, there's an episode with a lady called Penny, Wiveswap UK. You might know this show because there's been variants of it around the world.

And there was a blind woman called Penny.

And if you want to understand what it's like for a blind people in their daily lives, if you're sighted and you're watching this and you think, what is life really like for a blind person? Go watch that episode of Wiveswap. It is horrifying, but horrifyingly accurate as well. The way people treated her, the way people talked down to her, the lack of, talk about lack of expectations. Goodness me, I could do a whole hour just on that topic alone. It was shocking, but you must go and watch it. And if you do, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Let's collect, we should do a watch party.

Shaun Preece (3:22)

Can we do that?

Steven Scott (3:23)

I don't know, is that a thing?

Shaun Preece (3:24)

Let's make it happen. We can Claude it.

Steven Scott (3:27)

That's right, yeah, we'll send Claude it. Anyway, so yes, I put up on social media my average yearly reminder not to go and update to the software. And people were coming back to me and saying, you know, this is bad advice. You know, people should upgrade at their own risk. And someone actually said to me, this was the one that got me, oh, you know, look, bugs happen for everyone, right? VoiceOver users and not VoiceOver users. You know, at the end of the day, what's the difference? And I'm like, well, hang on.
