“Listen to Him” | What the Mount of Transfiguration Reveals About Jesus

I'm a little apostolic today, and so that's the space I lived in for a long time, and I felt that way this morning.

Got up, rewrote my sermon, still probably won't stay on my notes, and that's okay.

**Chris** (0:18)
But there was a prophecy in the Hebrew scriptures. See, one of the greatest events in the Bible, and for this church especially, since we celebrate Passover, and we remember Passover as one of the markers throughout the years, the Last Supper, where Jesus was in the upper room.
We remember being freed from slavery.

**SPEAKER_2** (0:39)
Now, it wasn't us, theoretically.

**Chris** (0:41)
It was our ancestors being freed from slavery at that point in time. But we remember that. We remember what Jesus has done in the upper room with the blood of the covenant, and what the bread broken of his body did for us, when he said, do this in remembrance of me. We remember that Exodus out of Egypt, where they were slaves and then made free. But there's a prophecy in the Bible that is given to the Hebrews. And it says that there will become a time where there will be such a great Exodus, some call it the Greater Exodus, that you won't remember and you won't think back to this pretty big thing.
I mean, again, anybody else seen Lake Thunderbird, Lake Dirty Bird, any of those part wide and walk across it?

I haven't seen nothing like that.

**Chris** (1:38)
If you've seen that, awesome.

**SPEAKER_5** (1:40)
I haven't seen it. Has anybody seen that? Have they seen whales swimming next to them? I ain't seen that.

**Chris** (1:44)
Like, there's a coming day, the prophet says, where you won't remember that Exodus, because there will be a greater Exodus that will happen that will surpass even that.
If the Hebrew slaves were led out to freedom, pretty big deal. And now there's a prophecy that says something so big will happen that you will not remember that, it will be the greatest of all time.

It will be the biggest Exodus of all time.

**SPEAKER_5** (2:25)
It will be unlike any Exodus we've ever seen before.

**Chris** (2:29)
And today, we have finally come to Matthew chapter 17
And this is one of the passages, will be in 17, 1-13.
One of the passages that I believe changes everything. Up to this point, we've gone 12 chapters over the last year and a half, through the writings of Matthew, through the gospel of Matthew. Up to this point, I can completely empathize, sympathize and understand why each and every one of the disciples and the apprentices of Jesus were still wrestling with the teachings and the showing and all the other things that he had done. Because he taught not only by words, he taught through his actions. I can understand why they still wrestled. What exactly is happening in front of us? Because they had lived in a culture that had painted a picture of what Mashiach Messiah should look like, and yet here's Jesus and he definitely looks like a Messiah.

He definitely looks like the fulfillment of the Torah and the prophets, but he doesn't look exactly like what culture was anticipating.

**Chris** (3:33)
And so they're questioning and they're wrestling, much like we do today with Jesus as the Messiah. Today, we're going to get to the passage that I think changes and answers all the questions.

You can say, Chris, nothing in the Bible changes and answers all the questions except for the cross.

**Chris** (3:50)
Okay, fair enough.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:51)
I agree with that.

**Chris** (3:54)
But up until this point, Jesus is predominantly taught in parables, and all of a sudden, He starts getting really direct, and then He gets really, really direct.

**SPEAKER_1** (4:03)
Like, direct, direct, direct, direct, direct.

**Chris** (4:10)
Last week, we left off with Matthew 16 28, where Jesus says, some standing here right now will not die before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom. This is right after He prophesied that He had to go to Jerusalem, that He was going to be put to death, that He was going to be beaten, He was going to be tortured, and that He would raise on the third day. Can you imagine hearing the words that not only do they have to wrestle with what's happening there, but then somehow they're going to see this King come in His kingdom?

Wait a second.

**Chris** (4:44)
The Messiah is supposed to bring His kingdom and establish His kingdom here and now, but we're going to see His kingdom coming. I can imagine the wrestle that they have.
