This is Mornings with Mark Duffield on SENWA.

Welcome back to the SENWA studio out here at Optus Stadium. A wet Wednesday morning in Perth. It's going to be a massive AFLW Derby played at Sullivan Logistics Stadium, 3.05 on Sunday afternoon. Fremantle is in 8th spot on the ladder on 16 points, and West Coast is chasing hard. Just one win behind them on the ladder, gathering themselves after a slow start to the season. Fremantle's AFLW coach, Lisa Webb, joins us on the line. Lisa, welcome.

Lisa Webb (1:08)

Thanks for having me, Duff.

Mark Duffield (1:10)

A big win over Adelaide at the weekend. I thought watching that game, that's as well as you have played in quite a while.

Lisa Webb (1:19)

Yeah, I think that's, sorry about the noise. That's one of the local drivers by. No, I thought it was.

The girls have been building towards something and really pleased. It was a big week last week and to show some of our best footy was really pleasing. There's still aspects of it we certainly want to keep improving on and we've got the right players to get that done. And yeah, just proud of the group for being able to be resilient, work through it and yeah, make some really good decisions with our ball in hand that we've been kind of looking for over the first few weeks.

Mark Duffield (1:56)

So, it was a big week for the club last week and the girls would have watched the grand final on Saturday. And obviously, we all know what happened there.

And there was a great disappointment for the club and the club's fans on the tail end of that. How did you deal with that with your players and get past it to play strongly the next day?

Lisa Webb (2:17)

Yeah, we've got a great leadership group within our program as well. So, we are organized to be together and watch it in a restaurant. And yeah, we're obviously right in the thick of it. And yeah, disappointing, but really proud in the same breath. And then after the game, we just really had to reset, because regardless of what had happened that day, we had a job to do. And we made a really strong decision as a group that we wanted to make sure that we were performing on that day. And that meant sacrificing not going to the Grand Final, even though we were supporting them from afar.

Not going there was a decision we made. We want to really prioritize playing really good football and being professional in our own rights. So, we did that and we knew we'd flown all the way to Adelaide. We wanted to get the job done for the fans as a whole as well. So, yeah, we reset by the next morning. We were raring to go knowing what we needed to do to play Adelaide.

Mark Duffield (3:14)

You got great pop from your forwards during the game, Lisa. Eden Zanka kicked three. Hayley Miller kicked two.

A couple of really good goals from Hayley. And Kiara Bauer is getting forward as well to kick a couple too. You must have been really pleased with the way your attack functioned.

Lisa Webb (3:31)

Yeah, and they have been working really hard on that. I've mentioned it a few times on the radio with you guys in the lead up to that.

It does take a little bit of time to get everything working or systems go. And really proud. But I also thought the way we would deliver the ball was a lot more predictable and connected. So they've been working hard the forwards, but so is the rest of the team. And how do we best deliver it to enable them to execute? And whether that's halfbacks or mids or the method that we worked inside 50, yeah, it was pleased and that's one game. And the challenge for us is to be as consistent as we can with that for the rest of the season.

Mark Duffield (4:08)

And you get the feeling that this is part of the transition you're undergoing at the moment. You're coming from being a really strong stoppage territory team to being more of a ball movement team. How do you feel you're progressing with all of that?
