And now, let's get started.
The Knicks planning a major move. The Knicks have been planning to make a major move since Draft Night. We know that now more than ever after these latest updates. Take a look at what Fred Katz had to say recently. He's an NBA insider with The Athletic.
According to Fred Katz, In addition to preserving some cap flexibility, the Knicks Draft Night trades also netted them a lot of cash. I think they got $7 million on Draft Night. And that was something they were targeting as well.
Now I know what you're thinking. Why did the Knicks target all of that money? What does it mean for the Knicks at this point? Thankfully, I have more information on that too. The $7 million is not salary cap space. It's actual money paid by other NBA teams to the Knicks. That cash goes to the franchise, not the players. Why would the Knicks do that? More financial flexibility. The cash can offset costs associated with running the team, buying second round picks in future drafts or other basketball operations. Avoid adding guaranteed salaries. Instead of drafting multiple rookies who would take up roster spots and payroll, they gain flexibility while still collecting assets. But this last one is the most important. Preserving options. By keeping the roster and payroll more open, the Knicks have more room to make trades or sign veterans later.
That last part is significant. By making all of these moves and gaining access to $7 million in cash after all the trades they made on draft night, New York now has more room to make trades. With that in mind, it's important to understand exactly what the Knicks' current trade assets are. According to Sports Illustrated, this is what the Knicks' top trade assets are at this point in time. Their 2033 first round pick. It's New York's most valuable trade asset due to its long term upside. Then they have that 2032 first round pick swap. It gives another team future flexibility if the Knicks decline. Then it's Miles McBride. He is a proven two-way guard on a team-friendly contract with strong league value. And then number four on this list is the 2031st round pick swap. It's valuable for future draft assets that could help complete a deal.
Then you have Pacome Dottier at number five. He's a young former first round pick with intriguing long-term potential. Then you have Tyler Kolek, a young backup guard who can appeal to teams seeking more depth at their guard position.
Then the last trade asset that the Knicks have available and they can offer another team is their 2027 second round pick via the Washington Wizards. It's an early second round pick that can be used as a valuable trade sweetener in any type of deal they look to make.
This is why I'm saying that the Knicks are planning to make a major move. And I believe that major move is going to be in the form of a trade. It's not an accident that the Knicks targeted all of this money on draft night. They're looking to make a trade. They've been looking to do that all off season long. Unfortunately, they have not been able to make a deal yet. New York has the assets available. We just reviewed a ton of them that they can put together in a deal to make a trade for another player. Likely a backup center that they can add to this team. Somebody that can go behind Carl Anthony Towns. Then after that player, it would be Andre Drummond. However, one thing that we cannot forget to mention is that the Knicks are the reigning defending NBA champions. And other teams around the league, let's face it, they do not want to make the Knicks a better team. What does that do for them besides helping their competition that they're likely wanting to take down in the NBA playoffs? Everybody knows that. And because everybody knows that, when the Knicks go to make a trade, it's not a normal trade for the NBA champions. That other team they're asking to make a deal with, they're likely asking for the Knicks to include a lot more assets than they normally would ask if the Knicks did not just win the NBA championship. That's why Leon Rose right now is looking through all offers.
