Okay, but tonight we're going to look at Luke chapter 5, and the first 11 verses, as Jesus is dealing with his disciples, and this is a sermon the Lord has used to just encourage me, and even this week, just doing some review and looking over it, the Lord just reminded me of some things, and just think this is exactly where we need to be tonight. So Luke chapter 5, verse number 1 The Bible says, And it came to pass that as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret. Gennesaret, Lake of Galilee, that's talking about the same place there. So he's up in the northern region there, near Caepernum, where his headquarters were. They're basically in Jesus' early ministry. And saw two ships standing by the lake, but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. He entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's. This would be Simon Peters, and prayed that he would thrust out a little from the land, and he sat down and taught the people out of the ship. Now, when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing. Nevertheless, at thy word, I will let down the net. And when they had done this, they enclos d a great multitude of fishes, and their net break. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them, and they came and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord, for he was astonished, and all that were with him at the draught of the fishes which they had taken. And so was also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not. From henceforth, thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all and followed him. And so our title this evening is this, Learning To Trust Jesus. Learning To Trust Jesus. Let's pray and ask the Lord's help tonight. Dear Heavenly Father, I come before you tonight. Lord, you know the struggles that I'm facing personally. You know the struggles that each person here is facing, Lord. And I pray that you would encourage us, that you would show us, Lord, your truth. Lord, that you would help us to specifically know exactly what you want us to do with those situations. Lord, I pray that we would see, Lord, you just give clarity, you give understanding in our lives through your Word. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Being a disciple of Jesus Christ is to be a lifetime commitment. The moment you get saved, the moment you place your faith in Jesus Christ and Him alone, you become a child of God. From that point on, Jesus calls all those who are the children of the Father, Jesus calls all those who are saved, saying, follow me. In fact, a couple years ago, we actually had a theme for the year, Follow Thou Me, working through the series. John, and Jesus is still calling disciples, follow thou me. You can be saved and not following Jesus. Right? Because our salvation is you can trust Jesus Christ as your Savior, but there has to come a point of decision where you choose to follow Jesus. The only problem is you can make that one-time decision. You know, I grew up in church and grew up going to teen camp, and we'd go to camp, and we'd make decisions. Yes, I want to follow Jesus. The only problem was we get back home, and then all of a sudden we actually had to make the decisions to follow Jesus. Right? And it's easy to maybe come to church, and God speaks to you about something, and you say, Lord, I need to do this, and you go back to your house, or you go back to your family, or back to work with all the zeal and fire. I want to serve the Lord, and then you realize that this isn't a one-time decision. In fact, Jesus did not tell his disciples, follow thou me once. No, if you look throughout the Gospel accounts, again and again, Jesus had to call the disciples who would become the apostles, follow thou me. Because there's a tendency to let other things begin to distract us. There's a tendency to allow other things to begin to crowd in. There's a tendency even to allow some of our own failures and fears to keep us from or distract us from following Jesus. And it's not like I don't want to follow Jesus anymore, but we get to the point where maybe I got to do, we say, I got to do this first, and then I could follow Jesus. Or I've got to take care of this issue over here. Or I failed in this. We pass out the Bible reading calendars every year.
