Paul Charchian is the host of Fantasy Football Weekly, the longest running fantasy football radio show and the owner of guillotineleagues.com. He's the former FSGA president too. He's a Minnesotan, a gamer, and he's a big fan of instrumental music. These are his late-round perspectives.
This episode is sponsored by Underdog. Underdog is the easiest place to play fantasy sports, and they give you a ton of different games and contests to choose from each week. If you think drafting is over because the season started, you'd be wrong. You can draft teams over there each week in literal minutes. Right now, if you sign up on Underdog with promo code LATEROUND, you not only get a deposit offer of up to $1,000, but you also get access to my rest of season rankings. Those will be emailed to you once you sign up. But when you sign up, you have to use promo code LATEROUND. Head to underdogfantasy.com or download the app to do so. Again, that's promo code LATEROUND. Now back to the show. Actually, there's one more thing. This episode was recorded before the Thursday night game, and we did talk about players who played on Thursday night. I'm recording this before that game's even played. So something may have happened during that Thursday night game that would have impacted the players that we talked about, like Chase Brown or Deontay Johnson. I just wanted to throw that caveat out there before you listen to this episode. Now back to the show.
Paul Charchian (1:34)
This is one of the highlights of my season, definitely the highlight of this week. An opportunity to talk to you and be on the show. Wow, so cool.
JJ Zachariason (1:42)
Thank you, I appreciate it. I feel like we could probably open up this show and the entire episode just talk about album leaf.
Paul Charchian (1:50)
Oh God, would that be awesome.
JJ Zachariason (1:52)
Yeah, right?
I feel like that you're, I think you're the only other human being, aside from my friend who actually introduced me to album leaf, who will listen to it.
Are you still like daily listening to that in the background?
Paul Charchian (2:05)
They're heavy rotation for me. Yeah, because for me, for working, I don't know about you, JJ, but I can't work with any music that has lyrics because the lyrics demand attention and I can put on instrumental music in the background. And so I've got all my instrumental work bands all ready to go and Albumleaf is so good for that.
JJ Zachariason (2:25)
Yes, like Explosions in the Sky. I'm sure you're listening to as well. I've gotten really into a video game lo-fi recently.
Paul Charchian (2:32)
Oh, tell me more. I love it.
JJ Zachariason (2:34)
So it's like the lo-fi stuff that folks have produced, but it's literally video games that I mean, mostly retro. Like there's a lot of Sonic stuff and like Super Mario stuff, but it's just it's chiller. You know, it's just like more laid back, relaxed, easy listening. Type stuff. You're a gamer too, right?
Paul Charchian (2:53)
I am. Yeah.
JJ Zachariason (2:54)
Yeah.
Paul Charchian (2:55)
I hosted a video game radio show for 14 years on our All Sports station here on Tuesday nights. And it was a ton of fun. And I loved talking video games and following the industry. And that industry's got about as much drama as the NFL does. And it's year round. And so there's always something new. There's always a new release, you know, there's always something going on and controversy. Like, there's a huge controversy around Dragon's Age right now.
I wish I had a microphone to talk about it. It's, yeah, it's, you know, I am a big gamer. I love the idea that you're talking about, where somebody takes 8-bit and 16-bit soundtracks and then makes them into low-fi chill electronica for today. That sounds super cool. You gotta link me.
JJ Zachariason (3:39)
It's really good. It's on Spotify. Like, you can find the playlist out there. But yeah, what kind of games have you gravitated towards? Like, what kind of genre are you into most?
Paul Charchian (3:49)
Mostly right now, and maybe it's because I'm getting older. I'm doing less like twitchy shooters, more like rogue-likes.
The game that has caught the most attention for me this year is called Bellatro. Have you heard about this?
JJ Zachariason (4:04)
I've heard it. I've heard about it, yes, but not in great detail.
Paul Charchian (4:07)
So the premise is you're playing poker against yourself. It's just a one-person poker game.
JJ Zachariason (4:13)
Okay.
Paul Charchian (4:13)
Yeah.
