Pat Daugherty is an NFL writer and podcaster at NBC Sports Rotoworld, and he's the king of player news blows. He's a Missouri native, a dad of many, a Jeff Fisher scholar, and he's very aware that he sounds like Charlie Day. These are his late-round perspectives.
This episode is sponsored by Underdog. Underdog is the easiest place to play fantasy sports, and they give you a ton of different games and contests to choose from each week. If you think drafting is over because the season started, you'd be wrong. You can draft teams over there each week in literal minutes. Right now, if you sign up on Underdog with promo code LATEROUND, you not only get a deposit offer of up to $1,000, but you also get access to my rest of season rankings. Those will be emailed to you once you sign up. But when you sign up, you have to use promo code LATEROUND. Head to underdogfantasy.com or download the app to do so. Again, that's promo code LATEROUND. Now back to the show. I was thinking, I was like, man, how has it been this long before I had Rotopad on Late-Round Perspectives? And then I realized, you know, I mean, I'm really just going by the people that I like the most in the, so this is like, this is number 40 or so of Late-Round Perspectives. And so this is about where you would rank for me, you know, within people that I've met in the fantasy space.
Patrick Daugherty (1:31)
You know, that's the joke answer. Everyone knows the real answer, of course, because of Denny and I's ongoing litigation. And it's just a little complicated to get me on. You, I'm friends with you, Denny's friends with you. This is a little weird stuff between Denny and I, but.
JJ Zachariason (1:45)
Yes, exactly.
Patrick Daugherty (1:45)
The lawyers said this was allowed finally.
JJ Zachariason (1:47)
Exactly, exactly. Yeah, you and I, I mean, look, you and I have hung out a handful of times now. You actually back in, I think we were in Nashville when this happened, we were out at dinner the one night and it was like peak Jeff Fisher gif time, right?
Like I had this, people don't even know about the Fisher Gifs, man. Like they don't even know that this was a thing. But back when Jeff Fisher refused to be fired from his job, where he just continuously maintained his gig. And look, I'm talking to somebody who is, are you still, do you still consider yourself like a Rams fan?
Patrick Daugherty (2:22)
No, thank God. No, I did not know what like the psychodrama with that would be, if I would still feel some weird attachment. But now it's like a divorce where, listen, I want her to be happy, but we're not ever speaking.
JJ Zachariason (2:36)
Okay. Okay. That's very, very fair. Very fair. But back then, so Jeff Fisher obviously was the Rams head coach. And there was, I mean, people knew that he was just incredibly mediocre at his job, but he was good enough to maintain his job. But he was also just kind of like an enigma. Like he was just a very interesting person and coach in the way that he kind of Arthur Smith-esque in a way. Right. Would you would you would you would that be his comp for you?
Patrick Daugherty (3:01)
What he actually, unlike Arthur Smith, he wanted to be loved. Yeah. But he was just a man out of time. He was like stuck ever so slightly between eras. And he got in at like the tail end of the old school football era where he found some success, of course, making a Super Bowl. But he was not ready for like 21st century passing pyrotechnics.
JJ Zachariason (3:20)
Right.
Patrick Daugherty (3:21)
They actually call penalties football. And he just was not ready, especially the penalties for us. They call penalties. Exactly.
JJ Zachariason (3:29)
But so back when when he was like like in in the conversation, if you will, I decided that I was going to make Jeff Fisher Gifts part of my brand. It was going to be because there were there were some random ones out there that I would use pretty frequently.
But then what really got this going was they were on Hard Knocks. And I would literally, I would watch Hard Knocks on my computer so that I could record a random Jeff Fisher interaction. Like one of them, I remember he was wearing glasses and there were glass. This is just so standard Jeff Fisher. There were glasses that they could, they were like readers that he could pull apart from the middle.
