My kids, I am going to ruin them because I had such a miserable childhood and their childhood is so incredibly bountiful and daddy's just going to ruin them with all his horrible stories. But I remember just as a kid going to another kid's house and seeing the football helmet and a lamp on his end table and going, what the fuck?
Is your dad, is he a 49er? No, no.
How did the lamp, there's a lamp coming out of a 49er helmet. Jesus Christ. What do you do? Mortgage the house? No, it's got that. Remember once in a while, you just see some of that. There's a, there's a bed shaped like a race car.
Michael Narren (1:52)
Holy shit.
Adam Carolla (1:53)
Where's your dad, Howard Hughes?
And then every once in a while, be one of these things where it's like, again, it was never the Corolla's had nothing. But once I go to someone's house and it's like, you'd see that crappy old timey looking like popcorn maker, like the one with the big wire wheels on it that was red, it looked kind of corny, but it was a popcorn thing and the dad would wheel. Jesus Christ, you got to, I need a bag to breathe into, you don't have to go to the theater, you got an old timey pop, you know, the gumball machine or God forbid, there'd always be that one guy whose dad had the slot machine that was parked in his den. Holy shit, holy shit. I remember just like, now my kid, my kid's gonna be driving a golf cart on the way to his giant, he's gonna be driving a golf cart that's gonna have the, you know, Ram's helmet put on it, right? I mean, inside of his giant castle, inflatable castle, like this stuff didn't exist at home when we were kids, right? You could go to an amusement park and see a gumball machine or popcorn machine. There's no such thing as any of this crap at home.
Larry Miller (3:06)
No, what's that, Donnie?
Donnie (3:08)
You know, we had the Mickey Mouse telephone in the apartment that freaked Mike out.
Larry Miller (3:15)
You had that as adults, though.
Adam Carolla (3:16)
We had it.
Donnie (3:17)
Yeah, Donnie.
Michael Narren (3:18)
Well, I brought it from my show.
Adam Carolla (3:19)
Quick, quick digression. When Donnie and I used to live in our first apartment in North Hollywood, it was on an alley.
And I used to work on my car out of the garage in the alley. And an alley is essentially a funnel for misfits.
There's a gravitational pull to alleys. I do think, like, cops ought to just set up in the alley.
Because it's really like the drug addicts, the drifters, the grifters, the second story guys, the guys who are breaking into cars and stuff. They all just end up being sort of sucked toward the alley. I don't know, even if they're not doing anything wrong, they would prefer to walk through the alley as opposed to just the well-lit Laurel Canyon Boulevard where the apartment was on. I just sit back there and work on my car and there'd always be some guy come in and inevitably strike a conversation up with me. And I was naive and nice and I had no self-esteem. And I was 20, 19
The guy started talking to me and he said to me like, hey man, I just got to blow out my old lady and I need a place to crash. You think I could come up and crash on the... I said, yeah, come on up. Crash on the sofa. It was a one bedroom. So, there was a cement finisher named Mike who had no front teeth. Who was one of these guys. I don't know if he had a wildly... I don't know if he had a wicked sense of humor, but he'd be like... He'd be one of these guys who'd look at you in a straight face. He'd be like...
