Welcome back to the Daily Crypto Deep Dive. Kraken has just bought technology responsible for creating more than 60 million crypto wallets. But this is not really a story about wallets. It is about Kraken attempting to become something far bigger than a cryptocurrency exchange. While most people still see Kraken as somewhere to buy Bitcoin, Ethereum or XRP, its parent company, Payward, has quietly been assembling nearly every component required to build an alternative financial system. Trading, custody, payments, tokenized shares, derivatives, banking connections, stablecoin infrastructure and now wallets that can be placed directly inside almost any application.
It is beginning to resemble what Amazon did with the Internet. Amazon started as a shop. It then realized the infrastructure powering its own business could power thousands of other companies through Amazon Web Services. Kraken started as an exchange. Now, it wants its infrastructure to power the companies, applications and financial products that ordinary people may use without ever realizing Kraken is underneath them. Today, we are investigating what Kraken has bought, how all of its recent acquisitions fit together, why embedded wallets could become one of the most important technologies in crypto and whether Kraken is quietly building the Amazon of digital finance. Kraken is no longer limited to cryptocurrency trading. Depending on your location and eligibility, its expanding platform includes crypto, stocks, futures, staking, and other financial products. Not financial advice. Crypto trading involves risk of loss and is offered to US customers through Payward Interactive, Incorporated. View legal disclosures at kraken.com. Never invest more than you can afford to lose. The latest part of Kraken's expansion is an agreement by Payward to acquire the wallet infrastructure business of Magic Labs.
Magic Labs may not be a household name, but its technology has reportedly powered more than 60 million wallets, handled over $10 billion in stable coin volume, and been used by more than 200,000 developers.
That immediately tells us something important. Kraken has not bought a small wallet application with a few thousand customers. It is acquiring technology already designed to create wallets at enormous scale. These are also not necessarily wallets that require users to install a separate application. Write down 12 recovery words and learn how gas fees work.
Magic Labs specializes in embedded wallets. An embedded wallet can be built directly into an application or website. A user may create an account using an email address, a mobile number or an existing social login, while the wallet is generated behind the scenes. Imagine opening a gaming application and receiving digital assets without first downloading Metamask. Imagine using a shopping application capable of sending stable coins without needing to copy a long blockchain address. Or imagine a bank adding access to tokenized assets inside its existing application, without building its own blockchain wallet system from the ground up. The user sees a simple button. Underneath that button, complicated wallet infrastructure is managing addresses, transaction signing, blockchain interactions and security.
That removal of complexity could be essential for mainstream adoption. Crypto has spent years telling ordinary people that they must understand seed phrases, private keys, networks, bridges and transaction fees before they can participate. Most people do not want to understand any of that. They simply want the product to work. People send an email without understanding how email servers route the message. They use a contactless bank card without studying the settlement system behind the payment. Crypto probably reaches its largest audience when blockchain technology becomes similarly invisible. By bringing Magic Labs technology into Payward services, Kraken could allow businesses to add self-custodial wallets and on-chain features through the same provider already supplying trading, custody, tokenized assets, funding services and derivatives. That is where the bigger strategy appears. Kraken does not only want people to visit the Kraken application. It wants other businesses to build products using Kraken's machinery. Payward services was launched as Kraken's business-to-business infrastructure platform. It is supposed to give companies one integration through which they can access multiple financial services. Instead of a company separately finding a wallet provider, a crypto exchange, a custodian, an on-ramp, a payments company and a derivatives provider, Payward wants to bring those components together. The Magic Labs acquisition fills one of the biggest gaps in that system. Kraken already had the market infrastructure. Magic gives it a way of placing that infrastructure directly into third-party applications.
This has similarities to Amazon Web Services.
