Major Trade Update. The Knicks making a trade feels like their next move. If Knicks owner James Dolan will not change his mind about going into the second apron, the only way the Knicks can get more depth at center after losing Ariel Huckporty and Mitchell Robinson is to make a trade. And according to Ian Begley, this is a possible name to watch for in New York on the trade market. Shout out to SNY's Ian Begley for giving us this following information and update on the Knicks next move after Mitchell Robinson signed with Boston. According to him, if they're trying to stay under the second apron, it would seem that they would have to go the trade route to acquire a center that's anywhere near the competency of a Mitchell Robinson. People are looking at Diabaté down in Charlotte as a potential tradeable center because Charlotte has that glut of bigs post-draft. The Knicks will have to navigate this thing and figure out how to replace Robinson.
Even James L. Edwards of The Athletic agrees with Ian Begley and he states the same thing, New York will need to pivot now to look at free agents and also the trade market to fill in the depth needed at the center position. According to Edwards, the Knicks must pivot to a cheaper backup on the market or a trade to shore up their depth.
So, then the main question becomes, what players on this team could be traded so New York can get more depth at the center position? Well, thankfully, we have a few names to look at.
Shout out to Ian Begley for giving us this following information. If James Dolan and the Knicks don't change their stance on the second apron, they would need to shed salary, presumably by trading either Pecone Dottier, Tyler Kolek or Miles McBride. Out of all of these players we just named, Miles McBride is the one being spoken about regarding a trade. And the reason is very simple. It's because New York knows that they will have to pay him.
Shout out to NBA insider Ian Begley for giving us this following information. According to him, this is how it usually goes. A team and the player will check in at the previous trade deadline before the extensions are coming up and see if there's anything there. And that's what happened here. And there obviously was not anything in terms of common ground on an extension between The Knicks and Miles McBride. And so now, you're going into a summer where Miles McBride, probably on the most team-friendly deal in the league, deserves to get a raise. He's going to get a raise if the Knicks aren't going to do it. I would assume, like you have, to look at other avenues because of A.
If you're the Knicks, it would probably be the best time to move him.
The question is, how much money will Miles McBride make on his next deal? And the answer to that is, a lot more than he's making right now with New York. And then you have B.
If you're looking at the second apron, and you're fearful about the financial implications there, there's also going to be a hurdle to cross if you want to give McBride that next deal. And I'm sure if he were to hit the open market right now, he's getting at least that full mid-level exception. That's around $15 million.
I would think multiple years, full mid-level. That means around $15 million per year to keep Miles McBride. And so that's kind of what the Knicks would be looking at if they wanted to extend him.
And I don't know if you let him get to free agency.
The main reason New York would trade him right now is because they would want to stay out of the 2nd apron, keep financial flexibility, and all they have to do is make a trade. They're definitely going to explore that possibility. Shout out to Ian Begley once again for giving us this following information. I think you try to extend him, but you have to figure this out kind of on the fly, because there's this window now where you would want to trade ship like McBride if you're trying to create some salary space between you and the 2nd apron. I think McBride would love to be here in a perfect world. The Knicks would love to have him, but with these salary constraints, the Knicks may have to make some hard decisions, and one of those decisions would be if they need to train Miles McBride right now, because they know they're not going to pay him, they know other teams will pay him, and they know if they don't make this move, they're not going to have the depth they need at center for next season. They lost Robinson, they lost Ariel Huckporty, now they need to find replacements for both of those players before it's too late, and all of the center options that they really want are off the market, or unavailable via trade. New York is going to have to make that decision. It's going to be up to the Knicks front office. But clearly, Deuce McBride, he is going to be part of those conversations. And right now, Miles McBride is firmly in that position where he's New York's best trade piece. I would hate to see Miles McBride go, but if he could be making around 15 million per year on his next deal, New York may not have a choice. They may need to trade him right now before he reaches free agency. They cannot let this man walk into free agency and have done nothing about it. Because if they do not pay him, if they do not get him on a new contract, and they let him walk, he's likely going to walk out of New York for free, because another team, they're going to pay him around 15 million dollars per year. And if they do that, there is a good chance New York won't match it, or even worse, they can't match that figure. That's why with this front office, we've seen it time and time again. With Emmanuel Quickly, with Julius Randall, if they know they're not going to be able to get a deal done, before they have to make that decision, they pull off a trade, get more assets in the process, and either get a player back, or clear some more cap space, so they can make another move. And right now, it feels like New York will be making a trade, and that trade will involve Deuce McBride. McBride wants to stay with New York. New York wants him to stay as well. It's not that the Knicks don't want McBride, they absolutely do. But if they know they're going to lose him anyways, then they have to make a decision. Can they re-sign him on a very low contract, or are they going to have to make that tough decision? Trading Deuce McBride, seeing what they can get back, and then using that additional money, that additional cap space, and use it in free agency to further put more depth at the center position. Not to mention, they'll likely move McBride for either Diabaté or somebody else on the trade market. It's likely New York has to replace both centers that they lost in a single day. And they'll do that via the trade market and free agency. But we know, Leon Rose, he's plotting, he's planning something. All of this is happening right now, and we haven't heard anything out of The Knicks. And that's not by accident. New York is definitely coming up with a strategy in order to address this situation. These are all the possibilities on the table right now. This is why a trade feels almost inevitable. The New York Knicks know they need to do something right now. They need to make a move. Everything is on the table. Either The Knicks will pay you or they'll trade you. And as of right now, given the financial restrictions and limitations, I'm leaning more toward trade because The Knicks need that flexibility.
