The Knicks still targeting Nick Richards in free agency.
We have mentioned the number of different center options the Knicks should target, but one player the Knicks have been targeting for weeks, and is still on their radar, is Nick Richards. According to Brett Siegel, an NBA insider with Clutch Points, he states the following, Siegel noted that Richards is one of the few available centers who could still make sense for New York. I mean, Nick Richards is one of the only options still out there in terms of who they could even sign in free agency.
Richards appears to be the most realistic name on the Knicks board at this stage. According to Siegel, I do think that Nick Richards is really the only possibility for the Knicks at this point. And you might be asking yourself, why is Richards still linked to the Knicks? And the main reason for that is his ties to CAA.
According to basketnews.com, one factor that could make Richards a logical fit is his agency connection.
Richards is represented by CAA, an agency with strong ties to the Knicks front office. Brett Siegel pointed to that connection while comparing New York CAA ties to the previous Clutch Sports Lakers era. According to Siegel, he is a CAA client, which makes a lot of sense with the CAA Knicks. Kind of like a few years ago, it was with Clutch Sports and the Lakers. Now, it's CAA Sports Knicks. But I think Nick Richards would be a solid second string or even third string center for them to pursue.
With the Knicks trying to stay financially flexible and close to their hard cap limit, the backup center spot remains one of their final roster needs. According to Siegel exactly. So, we'll see what Leon Rose and the Knicks can cook up. They're a team that always looks to get it right to the dollar in terms of their hard cap. So I would expect them to have something brewing there.
If the Knicks want Nick Richards, they'll need to move quickly here. The only reason I say that is because a number of teams right now are interested in adding him. With Philadelphia's soon acquiring wing, Tentavious-Caldwell-Poke via buyout, Richards could become the primary backup big to complete their second unit.
One thing is very clear to me, even though the Knicks have been linked and they have been targeting Nick Richards in free agency, there is a reason they have not pulled the trigger on him yet. There is a reason they haven't added him to the team yet. Not only that, there is a reason he's still available in free agency. That's because his game, ever since leaving the Hornets, has gotten worse and worse and worse. And that's why he's still available. Not to mention, New York has still been trying to pull off a trade with a number of teams. I dropped the video only a few days ago, indicating that New York has been in trade talks for a center with multiple teams. Unfortunately, they have not been able to find the deal that works for them yet. But that doesn't mean that they've stopped. That means they're still looking for that deal. So in my opinion, that's the main reason they haven't added Nick Richards yet, or really any other player in free agency yet. They're looking for a young and upcoming center that they can add to the team that can grow with this roster. And clearly, besides Musa Sisi, they really couldn't find that player in free agency. That's why they've been looking at the trade market. We don't know exactly what that move is gonna be yet, but if I'm a betting man, I'm thinking that New York will be making a trade to fill up that backup center position. Whether that be right now or during the trade deadline, that's what the Knicks are looking to do. And if they can't make that trade before the start of the season, then we know what they're gonna do. They're gonna sign a bunch of centers on non-guaranteed deals and have them fight it out. Battle it out in training camp to see who's the best fit for this team, and then they're gonna get that 14th roster spot.
