The Knicks receive a warning.
Imagine being the reigning defending NBA champions and still receiving a warning for next season. Now, stop imagining it and open your eyes, because that's reality. But what's crazy about all of this is that this warning is coming from a source very close to the team. This is what they had to say.
Shout out to Sports Illustrated and ESPN's Ben Gulliver for giving us this following information. The Knicks warned of potential drop off. In a recent article from ESPN, a source close to the Knicks was quoted as warning that next season will be a different level of task, and that they must understand the risk that comes with their 3-point dependent system.
According to ESPN, the Knicks are still in a good position to defend their title. 9 of the top 10 members of their playoff rotation are returning, and none of their key players appears to be headed for age-related decline. Still, a team source took a cautious approach when forecasting for next season, warning about the possibility of a championship hangover, and noting that the Knicks 3-point shooting could regress next spring after they ranked first in the 2026 postseason.
Hang on a second. Championship hangover? Regression from 3?
To me, it sounds like this team source is scared, or he's manifesting something that does not exist. Why would you think about the negatives when the positives are staring you right in the face? Most of this Knicks team from last season is coming back next season, only without Mitchell Robinson and Ariel Huckporty. But New York, they're still trying to make the right moves. What if New York gets better from 3, or stays the same from 3? What is anybody gonna say? Let's remember what the fact is right now. And the fact is, New York is the reigning defending NBA champions. Nobody's gonna take that from them, and they're at the top of the mountain. Could you think about the risks? What possibly could happen? What could be the case next season? Of course you can do that. But why would you? There's no point in doing that. There's no even point to this warning from this source close to the Knicks. Because at the end of the day, New York is gonna do everything in their power to get back to the NBA finals and try to run it back to back. And as long as that's the case, we shouldn't have any type of fears right now. We shouldn't be worried about anything. We should not be receiving warnings right now. If anything, New York should be the team offering out warnings. Every time I look at the odds or anybody talking about the Knicks, they say the same thing. The Knicks are not gonna win it back to back. No team wins it back to back anymore. Be happy that you won one and broke that 53-year curse, but it's not gonna happen again. And I don't care if they say that because they're saying that because they don't want to believe it. While New York, they have everything going in their direction right now. All they need to do is stay competitive and make sure they show up each and every game next season. And you know they're gonna do that, especially come the postseason. New York already knows there are levels to this. And we saw last season. During the regular season, New York operates at this speed. And then during the postseason, they have another level that they take it to. And that other level can help them get to the NBA Finals. But that's not the only warning I have for you guys today. We also have another warning coming from Jared Swartz, an NBA insider with the New York Post. And his warning has to do with Carl Anthony Towns and his upcoming extension. According to Swartz, he suggested that there's a chance that Towns could take the Brunson route in order to keep the championship team together. According to him, unless Towns believes it's his turn to sacrifice, as Brunson did, he and the Knicks could reach an agreement on an extension below the max amount. But something to understand here, in another part of this article from Jared Swartz, he mentioned that the Knicks winning a championship could change KAT's perspective on taking less with New York. He might see this as his final big contract where he can make max dollars, and he might take it depending on how he feels about this last season, winning a championship, and validating his career as one of the best big men in the NBA today.
