The Knicks miss out on Moussa Cisse. I was out and about yesterday meeting the world champions in Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. That's why I wasn't around initially when this news dropped. The news that the Knicks came to the following agreement with this player.
Shout out to Shams Charania for giving us this following information. Restricted free agent Moussa Cisse has agreed to a two-year contract offer sheet with The New York Knicks. His salary is half guaranteed in the first year, and in 2027-2028, it's non-guaranteed. The Dallas Mavericks have 48 hours to match it or not. And according to Ian Bagley, the Moussa Cisse offer sheet from The Knicks starts at the vet minimum of $2.5 million.
If the Mavs don't match the offer sheet by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, the Knicks would have landed a young center to bolster the debt after Mitchell Robinson and Ariel Huckporty signed elsewhere. If the Mavs don't match, the Knicks would lose the ability to sign their draft picks to contracts via the second round minimum while also staying under the second apron. So Tyler Nichol and Jack Cahill would need to agree to two-way deals in order to play with the Knicks next season. But almost as soon as this happened, the Mavs knew what they needed to do. They don't want to give the Knicks anything that they want. So what did they do?
They matched the offer. Shout out to Shams for giving us this following information. The Dallas Mavericks have matched the New York Knicks 2-year $4.7 million offer sheet on restricted free agent Moussa Cisse. The 6'11 center signed the Knicks offer sheet earlier on Saturday. But Dallas matches it well before the 48-hour Monday deadline. Because the Mavs did this, now they have 16 players on their roster. Even more than that, they have so many bigs on their team. So what's the plan here? What's the rule in regards to their roster and having 16 players in the offseason? How does all of this work? Well, thankfully, I have those updates for you guys.
Shout out to Sports Illustrated for giving us this following information. According to them, Dusty May's team has a glut of centers now, with Daniel Gafford, Derrick Lively II, Moraes Johnson and Santi Aldama. However, Lively has no timetable for a return after multiple foot surgeries, and the team is reportedly shopping Daniel Gafford. They also now have 16 guaranteed salaries, so they'll eventually have to eat a contract, but they have time since rosters can stretch to 21 players in the offseason. So they had a strategy in mind. They did not want to give the Knicks what they wanted, and now they can do that while holding as many as 21 players in the offseason. They actually have time. That means the Knicks, even though they want Moussa Cisse, they can't have him because Dallas is playing it this way. And the main reason they're doing that is because they don't want to help the Knicks, they do not want the reigning defending NBA champions to get even better. So they're blocking them.
Now I know what you're probably thinking. You're probably thinking, now the Knicks can trade for him since they can't get him in free agency. If you thought that, you'd be absolutely wrong. Because Dallas gave Moussa Cisse this new contract, he now has a no trade clause built into it. So he can't be moved for at least another year.
