The Knicks sign an elite guard. The Knicks continue to add talent to the team. With a roster that cannot go into the second apron, it opens up opportunities for younger players to step up and make a name for themselves. And the player The Knicks just signed, he has one of the best chances to do that. Shout out to Wilk 10 Network for giving us this following information. According to them, Jaden Akins signed the Summer League Deal with The New York Knicks. According to reports, Akins will no longer be representing the Hometown Pistons, and instead will be playing for The New York Knicks Summer League Team, in search of another two-way contract. This kid is an absolute steal. Take a look at what he did with the G League this past season.
Back in January of this year, Jaden Akins dropped 35 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and he was 12 of 23 from the field. He dropped the career high in overtime when he was playing the Westchester Knicks over in the G League. This kid is different. He's special. I cannot believe the Knicks have him on their Summer League roster.
This kid Akins is athletic. He's a great defender. His playmaking skills are already evolving. His three-point shot is getting better. He's a classic 3-and-D prospect. One player Knicks fans should keep an eye on during Summer League is definitely Jaden Akins. This kid is a steal. He's a 6'4 guard out of Michigan State who could quietly compete for a spot in New York's organization. Akins wasn't on the Detroit Pistons Summer League roster this year, which surprised a lot of people considering he spent last season with their G League affiliate, the Motor City Crews. But that decision may have opened the door for the Knicks, who are looking for affordable, NBA-ready talent to round out the back end of their roster. Last season with the Crews, Akins averaged 14.7 points and 4.8 assists per game, while shooting in the mid-30s from 3-point range. He also earned G League All-Star honors after transitioning into more of a point guard role, showing real growth as a primary ball handler and playmaker.
One performance that really stands out, and I just broke it down for you guys, came out earlier this year in January, when Akins exploded for a career-high 35 points, along with 5 rebounds and 5 assists, and he shot 12 of 23 from the floor that night. It was a reminder of the offensive upside he has when he's confident and aggressive. What makes Akins intriguing isn't just the scoring. He's known as a strong perimeter defender. He's athletic, can attack closeouts, create off the dribble, and has experience running an offense. Those are valuable traits for a guard trying to earn minutes at the NBA level.
He also comes from one of the best basketball programs in the country, playing under Tom Izzo at Michigan State. That means he understands discipline, defensive intensity, and how to perform under pressure. That background, combined with his G League experience, gives him a level of maturity that many summer league players simply don't have. For the Knicks specifically, Akins could fill an interesting role. While he's not the shooter or offensive creator that Jalen Brunson is, he does have some similarities in the way he can handle the ball, initiate the offense, and get downhill. He's probably better described as a two-way combo guard than a pure point guard. But there's enough playmaking ability there to envision him developing into a reliable backup or secondary creator. He's obviously not a finished product, and he'll need to become a more consistent offensive player if he wants to stick in the NBA.
