The Knicks are in Trade Talks. The Knicks are preparing for Mitchell Robinson to leave in free agency. Due to this, they are in Trade Talks with teams to try and trade for a center. In fact, before the NBA draft, New York attempted to trade for a center, but they were unsuccessful. Shout out to Ian Bagley, who answered the following question on the latest edition of his mailbag. Ian Bagley was asked the following, have the Knicks been in conversations with teams about centers they can trade for? And according to Ian Bagley, he gave the following response, Yes, before the draft, they checked in with at least one team with a center under contract. Obviously, nothing came to fruition. The team contacted by the Knicks was ultimately unwilling to part with its big man. The Knicks approach in this check-in was more than just due diligence. According to the team the Knicks spoke with, They were genuinely trying to get a deal done. Was this because they knew Mitchell Robinson would not be back? I don't know the answer to that, but logic tells you, they wouldn't have put a call in if they thought Robinson would be back. If the Knicks want to stay under the second apron next season, Robinson would have to take a significant pay cut to return to the team.
We don't have details on who was part of the trade package or what team the Knicks tried to trade with, but obviously it didn't work. However, we do have more information on potential targets that the Knicks are looking at.
Shout out to Ian Bagley for continuing to give us this following information. If the Knicks lose Robinson, they will have to find the serviceable center via the trade market or free agency. Free agency will be difficult because they will not be able to offer much, more than a minimum deal. The next place to turn is the trade market. Maybe Musa Diabate is available from Charlotte after they drafted a big man to add to their large center rotation. The Knicks have previously showed interest in Goga Batase, Yves Missy, and Nick Richards. I'm sure they will look at all options on the table if Robinson does not return.
But it's not just one insider stating this. ESPN also mentioned that the Knicks might need to make a trade, and that the chances of them keeping Robinson is even lower than we thought. Take a look at this update.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst added a bit more information to the Robinson Saga, saying that there is a real possibility that the Knicks won't keep Mitchell Robinson. According to Windhorst exactly, there is a real possibility they won't keep Mitch Robinson. The Knicks are working on it. They made several different moves to free up about $4 million in airspace under the apron. There is a possibility they may trade off another player to save money. They are trying to figure out Mitchell Robinson, but I would say it's not a guarantee that it will work. I would say Mitch is 50-50, maybe 51-49 to come back and return for New York. The reality is, it's unlikely that The Knicks will be able to re-sign Mitchell Robinson. That's why they attempted to try to trade for a center before the NBA draft, and the main reason they did not draft the center, even though in my opinion, they need more insurance at the position, is because the player that they need, the player that they want, if they have to replace Mitchell Robinson, they do not want that player to be a rookie. They want that player to have experience at playing center. That's why for me, out of all the names we just mentioned, that are potential targets for The Knicks, in my opinion, Yves Missy or Diabate are the only two players I would want The Knicks to add. And if they do make a trade to add those two players, you're likely losing Tyler Kolek, Pecone Dottier, maybe even Deuce McBride, either one of these players. Two of those players.
