The Knicks forced to make a major decision. The Knicks have 13 roster spots filled with enough money available to sign one more player. But that 14th roster spot, it's going to another center. This puts the Knicks in a problem situation, because they have two rookies that deserve to be signed. Now, the Knicks are forced to make a major decision.
Shout out to SNY's Ian Bagley for giving us this following information. According to him, rookie Jack Kayil has impressed the Knicks with his play in Summer League. Not bad for a 19-year-old taken with the 39th pick in the NBA Draft.
Kayil's mentality was probably one of the qualities that kept him on New York's radar ahead of the draft. If things continue to go well, it will be one of the reasons Kayil earns a bigger opportunity with the Knicks.
The Knicks obviously thought highly enough of Kayil to select him in the second round of the draft. Both Kayil and fellow rookie Tyler Nickel have impressed team personnel in Las Vegas. If their early play in Vegas is any indication, both players could have a future with the Knicks. New York needs to find young players and sign them to team-friendly contracts in order to navigate the NBA's second apron rules. It would be an organizational win if both Nickel and Kayil play their way onto New York's NBA roster.
Now I know what you're thinking. Can't the Knicks just sign both of these rookies to two-way contracts? Well, they can do that for Tyler Nickel, but not for Jack Kayil.
Ian Bagley continues here by stating, New York is currently 3.3 million below the second apron, with 13 players and with room for one more minimum. Owner James Dolan said in June that the team would not exceed the NBA's second apron in team salary. New York still needs a third center. If the club signs a center to a vet minimum contract, New York would not have enough room under the second apron to sign either Nickel or Kayil to a contract via the second round exception.
New York could offer Kayil or Nickel a two-way contract for next season, but in this scenario, New York would be prohibited from paying Kayil's buyout from his German club. The buyout has to be executed between the player and his overseas team. The Knicks can offer Tyler Nickel a two-way contract without this limitation. In the two-way scenario, though, the Knicks could convert either Kayil or Nickel to a standard NBA contract, once the pro-rated amount fits under the second apron. But because of this buyout, if Kayil is given a two-way contract, New York cannot buy him out from his German club. That means it's most likely that Kayil will play next season overseas, while Tyler Nickel plays next season with the Westchester Knicks. But just because Jack Kayil will be going back to play overseas doesn't mean that the New York Knicks do not see him as a future piece.
Whatever happens from here, it's safe to assume that both Tyler Nickel and Jack Kayil will have an opportunity to play for the Knicks in the near future. For Kayil, the only question is whether he is with New York in 2026, 2027, or in a subsequent season. Whenever Kayil gets his chance, the guard will come to New York with some qualities that are precursors to NBA success.
Truthfully, I want Nickel and Kayil to be part of this Knicks team for next season. But given the fact that Jack Kayil needs to be bought out, and that won't happen if he's given a two-way contract, it's almost a guarantee that next season he'll be playing overseas. And maybe that's a good thing. Now that he knows what the Knicks need him to develop, and what they want him to work on, maybe when he goes overseas for next season, he can work on those things, so that way, when he comes back to the Knicks, whenever that happens, he'll be an even better player, exactly what the Knicks are looking for. And with regards to Tyler Nickel, his shot is already NBA ready. The main reason he'll be playing with Westchester next season is to work on other parts of his game. And if he can get those other parts of his game just as good, if not better than that shooting that he has from three, then it's only gonna be a matter of time before you see him on the Knicks bench under a standard NBA contract. Like I said before, that three-point shooting, not only is it needed, it will translate immediately. Tyler Nickel is one of the steals of the NBA draft. Definitely one of the steals of the second round. And the Knicks got him. And from the looks of it, they're not gonna let him go. They're gonna continue to develop him so he can be a future bench piece. And like Ian Begley said, the main reason the Knicks are going to do this, especially with the young players, is because that second apron, it's real. They can only keep so many players and sign so many players in free agency before they run out of money, or before they hit that second apron. And New York does not want to get there. That's why they need to develop these young players, so that way in the future, they're on the books. They're part of the cap space. And if they're young players, they're not going to be making a lot. And if they're good young players, they're going to have an impact off the bench without affecting the cap too much. And that right there is New York's dream scenario.
