Without further ado, let's get to my review of Kanal. De Kanal, directed by Andrzej Wajda, is a gripping and haunting portrayal of the Warsaw Uprising during World War II. Released in 1957, this film is the second instalment in Wajda's war trilogy, following a generation and preceding Ashes and Diamonds. Set in the final days of the 1944 uprising, the movie captures the desperation and futility faced by a group of Polish resistance fighters as they attempt to escape the Nazi onslaught through the sewers of Warsaw. The film opens with a masterful four-minute tracking shot that introduces us to the main characters, a company of 43 soldiers led by Lieutenant Zadra, played by Wienczyslaw Glinski. This sequence sets the tone for the film, highlighting the grim reality of their situation. The soldiers, once 70 strong, are now reduced in number and spirit, facing an inevitable doom as they navigate the war-torn streets of Warsaw. Wajda's direction is both visually striking and emotionally resonant. The cinematography by Jersey Lipman captures the stark contrast between the bombed-out cityscape and the claustrophobic, labyrinthine sewers. The film's descent into the sewers symbolises a journey into hell, where the characters are engulfed in darkness, waist-deep in sewage and surrounded by the echoes of their own despair. The use of chiaroscuro, lighting and expressionist angles enhances the sense of entrapment and hopelessness.
The narrative is driven by the interactions and relationships among the soldiers. Characters like the humane Lieutenant Zadra, the rigorous aid Madri and the messenger girl Halinka, played by Teresa Izewska, are brought to life with depth and nuance. Their stories unfold against the backdrop of war, revealing moments of tenderness, bravery and tragic irony. The film's dialogue, often laced with dark humour and poignant reflections, adds layers to the characters' struggles.
Jan Crenz's musical score complements the film's atmosphere, shifting from bold orchestral gestures in the combat scenes to a more subdued, haunting tone as the characters descend into the sewers. The music underscores the tension and despair, enhancing the emotional impact of the narrative.
Kanal is not just a war film, it is a powerful, anti-war statement. It portrays the senselessness of conflict and the human cost of war. The film's depiction of the Warsaw Uprising serves as a memorial to the thousands who perished, highlighting the bravery and resilience of the Polish people. Despite its bleakness, Kanal is a testament to the enduring spirit of those who fought against overwhelming odds. Wajda's film is a masterclass in storytelling, blending historical context with personal narratives to create a compelling and thought-provoking experience. It challenges viewers to confront the harsh realities of war while honouring the sacrifices of those who lived through it. Kanal remains a significant work in the Canon of War cinema, a poignant reminder of the past and a cautionary tale for the future. That brings us to the end of my review of Kanal, and I'm giving it 4 stars out of 5 stars.
