Just the Tip?
Data Over Dogma
May 19, 2025
Well kids, this one's a doozy! This week we're talking about a controversial Biblical practice that is still done by many today (and the truth is that it should probably be more controversial than it is). That's right, this week we're talking circumcision!

Now, Dan, I know that you are a firm mattress guy. And so you got, when Brooklyn Bedding came on as one of our sponsors, you went ahead and got a firm mattress. I went with the Sedona Elite, which is awesome. It's got dual inner spring technologies. It's got two different sets of springs, as well as the foam in between.
It's a medium firmness. So for me, I'm a guy who has been known to be a tosser and a turner. I'm a side sleeper. I'm a back sleeper. I do all the things. And I have struggled to find a mattress that can really, you know, just support me in the ways that I like to be supported by a mattress. And oh, the Sedona Elite, my friends, you're gonna want to check it out.
Dan McClellan (0:50)
Brooklyn Bedding has something for everybody, whether you are somebody who is correct about firmness, like me, or you're somebody who is like, I'll take an extra medium.
Like Dan, they have non-traditional sizes. You can find all kinds of different sizes. My wife and I, we went with the Cal King. We enjoy that. Although most nights, I end up sleeping on the one foot on the end of the mattress with my wife chasing me down. So, but Brooklyn Bedding has some wonderful options. It's free of fiberglass. Their mattresses, which can be harmful to your health. They ensure their entire facility is free of fiberglass. You can sleep on your Brooklyn Bedding mattress for up to 120 nights. And if you don't love it as much as I love mine, they'll help you return it. Or you can pick out a different one.

You never know when God's gonna pop up and decide to kill you.
Dan McClellan (2:46)
That reframes a little bit the popular Latter-day Saint painting of Jesus in the middle of the night knocking on the door.
Dan Beecher (2:54)
Hey, are all of your children's penises intact? Because I'm not down with that.
Dan McClellan (3:05)
Hey, everybody. I'm Dan McClellan.
Dan Beecher (3:07)
And I'm Dan Beecher.
Dan McClellan (3:08)
And you're listening to the Data Over Dogma podcast, where we increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion, and we combat the spread of misinformation about the same. How are things today, Dan?
Dan Beecher (3:21)
Things are great. Things are great. As in our timeline, you and I just got back from our first leg of our tour.
Dan McClellan (3:30)
Yes, our multiverse.
Dan Beecher (3:32)
That's right. For our listeners, that's still a week or two ago. I don't know. I don't know when this thing comes out, but it was an amazing time. We had such a good time. We met so many of our listeners and viewers, and that was fantastic. So I'm still riding the high, baby.
Dan McClellan (3:51)
Yeah, and we're about to head out again on the 17th, which will this be out by the 17th?
Dan Beecher (3:57)
Probably. I don't know.
Dan McClellan (3:59)
I don't know. Who knows?
Dan Beecher (4:00)
Who knows?
Dan McClellan (4:01)
I don't know when this stuff happens.
Dan Beecher (4:02)
Maybe when you're listening to this, we're in Dallas or we're in Atlanta or something. Who knows?
Dan McClellan (4:09)
Yeah, who knows?
Dan Beecher (4:11)
But yeah, that was a lot of fun. And I'm excited about today's show. I think it's going to be fun. Yeah, we're we're tackling two spiky issues, sensitive issues.
Dan McClellan (4:25)
Yeah.
Dan Beecher (4:26)
Yeah. Interesting stuff. So the first thing we're going to do, it's going to be our hood at and we're going to talk about Jephthah, which is fun, as fun to say as it is to talk about. And an interesting decision that he made and what followed thereafter. And then we are going to talk about something that keeps coming up in the Bible and keeps confusing me and making me feel weird. So that's going to be circumcision. And that'll be in the second half of the show. So if you're squeamish, you can listen to that one on double speed or something like that.
