Yeah, I was good, five, four, three. I was good that day, but then the next day, like, oh.
Live, and we're live, Herb Dean, how are you, sir?
Herb Dean (0:11)
I'm good, how about yourself?
Joe Rogan (0:12)
So glad we're finally doing this. You and I have talked about doing a podcast for the last, like, three years.
Herb Dean (0:17)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, yeah, I'm glad to be on it, yeah. Thank God we're able to talk to you for a little bit.
Joe Rogan (0:23)
I think, and I've said this before, you have the hardest job in the sport other than the fighters. There's the fighters, obviously, they have the hardest job.
You have the second hardest job. Referee is the second hardest job in the sport. It's a fucking hard job. Like, you have so much responsibility.
Herb Dean (0:38)
Yeah, I think you have a really hard job. I think the talk, how long do you talk for?
Joe Rogan (0:42)
It's just hours, six hours.
Herb Dean (0:45)
Six hours, and sometimes there's not always something interesting to talk about, and, or sometimes, yeah, so I think it's amazing to be able to talk about that.
Joe Rogan (0:54)
It's not that easy. It's not that hard, rather. It's pretty easy. It's pretty easy. I mean, it's just a bunch of stuff's happening, and you're calling it.
And I'm a blabbermouth, so I can't shut the fuck up anyway. So if there's spots where it's not that interesting, I'll just find something interesting to say.
But it's not that, it's, you know, in terms of like, what's happening is happening. You know what I mean? A guy's getting hit, a guy's getting choked, there's a lot of crazy action going on, and it's really pretty easy if you're a lifelong fan of martial arts like I am to call it. You know, as long as you're enthusiastic and you're interested in, and you know, you gotta treat it with respect. You gotta treat it for what it is. You know, you're trying to entertain people.
You're trying to use your words in the most pleasing way possible. You know, you're trying to massage people's ears in a way. You know, you're trying to also represent what you're seeing and how special it is. Especially great fights.
Herb Dean (1:50)
Yeah, I did it a little bit, not for real. Like, somehow I used to do this thing that was for these people, Black Belt TV, and I was with Don the Dragon Wilson, and they were just like old fights, and we're supposed to commentate this old fight. And that's why I think it's hard, because I was horrible at it.
Joe Rogan (2:05)
Well, old fights are harder, because you might know what's already happened. So you got to play dumb. So it's like almost like you have to be an actor as well as commenting on a fight. I think it would be harder to call an old fight.
Because in the back of your head, you'd be like, I'm a big phony. This fight's already happened.
Herb Dean (2:23)
I know what's happening.
Joe Rogan (2:24)
This fight has already happened.
I think they did that with some of the Pride fights. I think some of the Pride fights, they did the commentary after the action. Because you remember when Pride would come on at like three o'clock in the morning, and we wouldn't get it to like a day later or something like that?
Herb Dean (2:41)
Yeah, I remember one time, oh, the worst is when one of your friends tells you, because you wait, you don't look at the internet. I remember I was training, and I think I went and I trained with Savant one time. I don't know if you know him, Savant Young. Yeah, and we had been in the car the whole time rolling. I was like, when I get home, I'm gonna watch Pride.
And then right before, I dropped him off at his house, right before he gets to the car, he goes, oh, Vanderlei Silva lost.
Joe Rogan (3:04)
Oh, no!
Herb Dean (3:04)
Or something like that.
Joe Rogan (3:07)
Yeah, we would have to wait. Sometimes, there was a couple of events where I feel like it was like a week or something crazy. Wasn't it?
Herb Dean (3:14)
Mm-hmm.
Joe Rogan (3:15)
So you had to stay off the internet for a week?
Herb Dean (3:18)
Which is good for me. You know, I could do it, but yeah. But you gotta also avoid all your friends who are little internet fanatics. They start talking, you're like, stop, stop.
I don't know who won yet.
