Three, two, Youngstown, the House. How are you, brother?
Kelly Pavlik (0:09)
Good, how are you doing?
Joe Rogan (0:10)
Thanks for doing this, man, I appreciate it.
Kelly Pavlik (0:11)
No, thanks for having me on, I appreciate it.
Joe Rogan (0:13)
You're out here working with Danny Garcia? No, I'm Mikey Garcia.
Kelly Pavlik (0:19)
Mikey Garcia and Garcia Camp. Also, I came out, you know, a couple things, as we mentioned earlier, a buddy of mine, Mark LaMica, throwing some ideas around, and kind of just taking a week out here in California to, you know, keep moving.
Joe Rogan (0:34)
It's nice, right?
Kelly Pavlik (0:35)
It is nice. Yeah, it was nice in Ohio, believe it or not, and then this morning, they woke up to like three inches of snow.
So I'm out here enjoying and they got the snow.
Joe Rogan (0:46)
Well, the thing about LA is no one's from here. So everybody grew up in a place like Youngstown or something like that, like you were saying, you're running into a bunch of Youngstown people out here. Tony Hinchcliffe got super excited to see you.
Kelly Pavlik (0:55)
Absolutely, and that's what's weird about that. I'm excited to see him and he's excited to see me. And it was really cool.
You know, I've heard of Tony and I knew of Tony before and everything. And then to finally be able to meet him and somebody from Youngstown that's doing great things, it was kind of cool.
Joe Rogan (1:13)
Yeah, no, it was cool hanging out with you when we were in Columbus, too. That was a fun time.
Kelly Pavlik (1:16)
I was, that was good eatin too.
Joe Rogan (1:17)
Yeah, what was the name of that place again?
Kelly Pavlik (1:20)
You guys picked it, I believe.
Joe Rogan (1:21)
I think it was- Italian Market, I think it was. Whose joint was that?
Kelly Pavlik (1:24)
It was your friend's, friend of a friend.
Joe Rogan (1:25)
Matt Brown's friend, right? Yeah, I don't remember the name. Matthew Mornell.
Kelly Pavlik (1:28)
Yeah, another good guy.
Joe Rogan (1:30)
Yeah, no, he's a fuckin scary dude. He's such a savage.
Kelly Pavlik (1:34)
I gotta tell you a funny story with him.
We're at my gym and he came and did a seminar at my gym. And I have just a fitness gym right now there. And he was goin over and he was showin people when he kinda came in and I was showin like a little punch and a hook. And he started doin the elbow off the hook.
Now, I'm a pretty big guy now since I retired and I'm workin on losin weight. But he hit me with that elbow on my arm and it just hurt. And it was slow motion. He wasn't throwin it hard. And I'm goin, if this son of a bitch really wanted to turn that over, I wouldn't wanna get hit by it.
Joe Rogan (2:08)
Yeah, elbows are awful. Bones are awful.
It's like, it always weirds me out that the UFC has little padding on the gloves, but there's no padding on your shins, no padding on your elbows, no padding on your knees. It's a terrible way to take a beating.
Kelly Pavlik (2:24)
It is, and people get into the brutality of it.
Unfortunately, not cause I boxed, I think box is more brutal. The only reason is because if you get dropped in boxing, you got 10 seconds to get up, your brain could be rattling the first round and you could get dropped four more times in that fight. You got 36 minutes to fight. Unfortunately in MMA, yeah, they're hittin you with the knees, the elbows, and if you go down, they usually stop to fight. Rightfully so, because somebody could come down with an atomic knee drop and, you know.
Joe Rogan (2:51)
That's not legal.
Kelly Pavlik (2:52)
Yeah, I know, but I'm just saying, it's, or anything can happen in it, so.
Joe Rogan (2:56)
When you were fighting, MMA wasn't as big as it is now, but did you ever think about doing it?
Kelly Pavlik (3:01)
No, and to be honest with you, no.
But I was always interested in it.
I was, I was always interested in the martial arts. Actually, that's how I got into boxing, was a young kid taking taekwondo and I don't know, that's how you pronounce it, but, okay, and, you know, I got into it with that. It was, to me, it was kind of like boring. I'm a young kid, you know, I was full of piss and vinegar and I wanted to actually get in and do something. And I played other sports, but you know, then after I retired a little bit, I kind of strayed away from everything in the fight game. And I started getting interested in jujitsu and stuff like that.
