Joy & Jinger: Driving at 14, Grandma's Road Rules & Taking a Big Rig to the Dentist

Call Your Sister with Joy & Jinger

October 7, 2026

This week on Call Your Sister, Joy and I are talking all things learning to drive. We grew up in Arkansas, where you can get your permit at 14 with a quick written test, and our dad taught us to drive long before any of that.

College football is back, so Hilton called on me, the superstition concierge, to make your fan rituals a reality. Need a room to match your lucky number? We got you. Want to make sure our team doesn't wash your lucky jersey? Oh, that smells lucky.

Hilton's unmatched hospitality can keep up with any superstition. Even a marching band wake up call at 555 and 55 seconds. Hit it! When you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day, it matters where you stay. Hilton, for the stay.

Joy Forsyth (1:00)

We are going to be talking today about all things learning to drive. Because in Arkansas, you can get your permit at 14, which is seems really crazy.

SPEAKER_3 (1:09)

It's actually terrifying.

Joy Forsyth (1:10)

I was surprised I passed, but we'll get into that. Pops always had his things. He would say 15 passenger vans have the highest rollover rate of any vehicle.

Jinger Vuolo (1:19)

Yeah, I definitely do correct Jeremy. He's driving.

Joy Forsyth (1:24)

It's so bad.

Jinger Vuolo (1:25)

I don't know if I should say this, but...

Joy Forsyth (1:30)

Welcome back to another episode of Call Your Sister. We are going to be talking today about all things learning to drive.

Jinger Vuolo (1:39)

I'm excited for this one.

Joy Forsyth (1:40)

Yeah, it's going to be kind of crazy, kind of fun. And we're going to talk about if we've ever had any accidents and all the things. So let's get into it.

Jinger Vuolo (1:48)

Joy, I actually love your mug.

Joy Forsyth (1:50)

Oh, thank you, Jinger.

Jinger Vuolo (1:51)

It's the vibe of this room.

Joy Forsyth (1:53)

It's your mug.

Jinger Vuolo (1:53)

Pop of color.

Joy Forsyth (1:55)

I actually was going through the mug. I was like, what would go with the set? Well, I love it. This is fun.

Jinger Vuolo (2:00)

So awesome.

Joy Forsyth (2:01)

It's, you know, tea.

Jinger Vuolo (2:03)

It is tea.

Joy Forsyth (2:03)

I've been drinking a lot of tea recently. It's very good.

Jinger Vuolo (2:06)

I love that you and Austin are tea drinkers. I don't understand that world at all. I have tried to get into tea. The only time I drink tea is when I feel under the weather.

And I just, I kind of just forced myself to drink it. If I'm at somebody's house and they serve it, I will drink it. But I don't prefer it.

Joy Forsyth (2:25)

I do. I love tea.

And I guess I like the sweeter, I don't like the more herbal, like where it tastes like you're drinking leaves. But I like the comfort teas, like the lemon lavender, like that kind of tea is really good.

Jinger Vuolo (2:43)

So Joy, who taught you to drive? Was it me? No, it was not you.

Joy Forsyth (2:48)

Okay, so my dad actually taught me to drive.

He would take us out whenever it was like time for us to get our permit and we would practice on the property. But before that, actually, we drove, I don't know if you did as much. Did you drive like the golf cart and the RTVs and stuff?

Jinger Vuolo (3:05)

I drove RTVs and stuff like that.

Joy Forsyth (3:07)

We drove those for a long time on our property before we even got our license. And I think that that actually helped us a lot with driving.

Jinger Vuolo (3:16)

I think we actually started out with the weed eater. And so we had to use a weed eater for a while. And then we worked our way up to the lawn mower. And then from the lawn mower, we'd work our way up to a golf cart and then RTV.

And then on to the car. That's how I remembered it. It's true.

Joy Forsyth (3:33)

But yeah, I do remember we set up cones in a parking lot at a hotel that was like convention center that was empty parking lot.

And I practiced like not hitting the cones and parallel parking. Wait, was that filmed? It was filmed.

Jinger Vuolo (3:49)

And now I'm wondering.

Joy Forsyth (3:51)

It was. And I'm wondering now if Mama was actually the one for that scene.
