Aloha, everyone, and welcome to another wonderful episode in the AI sphere. Today, I'm joined by Beth and Andy, and I am Jyunmi. And this is episode 768, and it's Wednesday, July 15th, 2026 And this is The Daily AI Show.
So today, we're gonna talk about all of the news in the AI sphere. I'm sure only one or two things have happened.
I'm excited, of course, to hear the latest from Andy and Beth regarding the juggernauts of the AI space, battling it out by giving more freebies to us lowly commoners. Other than that, of course, if you see this space, you're going to see a AI and science segment. Today, we're gonna talk about micro robotics and how that field has recently been invigorated by the works of the University of Copenhagen and their association with Sakana AI. And I'm sure since this is The Daily AI Show, you have heard at least the news about Sakana's latest paper and what they're doing in that space. All right. So before we dive and delve deep into the world of AI news, I want to check in with both of my co-hosts here, Andy, Beth. It's been a couple of weeks. What's been up?

**Andy** (1:36)
So good to see you again, Jyunmi. I'm excited about hearing some frontier science that's driven by AI, and I have a couple of small things to contribute, I hope, on that front as well. That's interesting. Front, it's the front, and that's what they mean by the frontier. I never thought of that.
Anyway, but the big shocking news today is that yesterday, in a steeper drop than even Black Friday, IBM, which is a major technology company, remember them?

**Beth** (2:14)
UCHIP stock. UCHIP?

**Andy** (2:18)
25% on the stock market. And here's the back story of it. So IBM warned that its two revenue would rise only 1%.
And it's not small revenue. It's $17 billion per quarter, which is what IBM's revenue level is. But it looks like it's stopping growth. Now a large portion of IBM's sales are in large scale mainframes. And analysts say what is going on here is that enterprises who would normally have a capital expense budget to buy these large scale compute systems are having to reserve those CAPEX dollars for AI related investments. And so a lot of the deals that were planned to close based on forecasts for IBM didn't close as those companies face those constraints. So that is really crimping IBM. But remember, IBM isn't absent in the world of AI.
They're the purveyors of the main AI systems that first conquered chess and other things. Big Blue is the name of their AI history. But they have internal AI developments as well. And more importantly, they are one of the leaders in the development of quantum computing. So to have that major marquee player in the world of information technology suddenly drop by 25 percent, either says, wow, there's disruption that's leaking over onto the stability of other players in the field, or it's a big buying opportunity for everybody. Because ultimately IBM is likely to survive and will become forward as IBM's quantum computing accomplishments become more apparent.

**Jyunmi** (4:45)
Yeah, a 25 percent jump does sound like quite a bit.

**Andy** (4:50)
Yeah, just a jump off the cliff.

**Jyunmi** (4:53)
Right. Sure enough.

**Beth** (4:58)
So that reminds me and I'm trying to pull it up. There was news out of China about a light-based chip that is, I'm not going to get the words right, but it's stacked more efficiently. It's spread like some massive number of petaflops and I will pull it up while somebody else talks. But the idea behind it was, again, that constraining something creates the need for ingenuity, and so because they were constrained and didn't have access to our chips that they were able to move forward in some of this. This again, we haven't seen it. It's just news, but it is very interesting news in terms of innovation and it's not quantum computing, but it is somewhere adjacent in the gap between where we are now in terms of our chip production and the technologies that power the chips and what we would need in the future.
Quantum is way more power hungry, isn't it, Andy?

**Andy** (6:20)
Yeah, I missed what the entry sentence was there. So you're talking about some kind of new chip design that's coming out of China that is a major advance.
Repeat again who it is and what the technology sort of breakthrough was.

**Beth** (6:42)
So it's a photonics breakthrough, I believe, and also a design breakthrough. And I'm trying to pull it up as well.
