Hello there, welcome back to Brilliant Minds. Today we're going to talk about John D. Rockefeller, one of the most famous businessmen in history. Now, when people hear his name, they often think about money. Lots and lots of money.
In fact, many historians believe he became one of the richest people who has ever lived. But John's story didn't begin with millions of pounds or giant companies. It began with a boy who believed that every penny mattered. John was born in New York state in the United States in 1839 His family didn't have lots of money, so from a young age he learned the importance of working hard and being careful with what he earned. As a boy, John raised turkeys, sold sweet even did small jobs for neighbors to earn a little extra money. Here's something amazing. He carefully wrote down every penny he earned and every penny he spent. Imagine keeping a notebook of every pound you received for birthdays, chores or helping a neighbor. John believed that good habits with a little money would help him if he ever had a lot. That simple habit stayed with him for the rest of his life. As he grew older, John got his very first office job. He was only 16 years old. He worked as a bookkeeper, recording numbers and making sure every payment was correct. Some people might think that sounds boring. John thought it was fascinating. He believed that understanding money helped people make better decisions. Before long, John wanted to start a business of his own.
Around that time, people were discovering new ways to use oil. Oil could be turned into kerosene, which helped light homes before electricity became common.
John realized that instead of searching for oil himself, he could build a business that cleaned and refined it. He worked hard to make his company more organized and efficient than his competitors.
