Jaylen Waddle on Being WELCOMED to Denver, Sean Payon on Bo Nix & More | Inside Broncos Practice

The first week of Broncos OTAs is in the books, and I'm gonna break down everything you need to know after I just watched practice. Let's dive in and let's start off with who was not practicing, and that is franchise quarterback number 10, Bo Nix. He did not practice, this is not a surprise to anyone, but he was out on the practice field. And honestly, that wasn't expected, so that's a good step to see Bo Nix walking on the practice field on his ankle. He was wearing a long sleeve shirt with a hoodie on top and nothing on his ankle. I didn't see a brace, I didn't see a boot, there was nothing outside of a white sock on top of or over his shoe. So he should be still on track to go this off season. Sean Payton said after practice that the plan still stays the same with Bo, and that is that he should be back on the practice field in two weeks from now when the Broncos have mandatory mini camp June 16th, 17th and 18th. Bo Nix is expected to still be out there. So no news in terms of Bo is good news in this regard. And he is throwing actually, he did not do it during practice, but Sean Payton said after practice that Bo Nix is throwing in the pre-portion of practice. That means he's able to put weight on his foot and he is taking steps in the right direction. Sean Payton said everything's still on track to what he told us last time. And what he said last time was he's going to be 100% ready to go for training camp. And if that's the case, then all is fine. But until then, all eyes will be on that ankle. And the ankle looked good today. And when I saw Bo out there, not only did he look good, he was right in the middle of the action. He was right next to Jared Stidham and Sam Ellinger listening to Davis Webb chopping it up with the offensive guys. So he is taking mental reps and getting the work in, even though he cannot play right now. Let's get to who was practicing. We got to see number 17 out there for the first time, Jaylen Waddle, donning a Broncos jersey for the first time. And I'll tell you what, he looks as advertised. And he's advertised as explosive and fast. And that's what he looks like. He's not the tallest guy in the world, especially when you see him next to Cortland Sutton, but he is fast and explosive. And in fact, Sean Payton said, Jaylen had a really good practice yesterday. We weren't able to watch that. No media was allowed there. So I'll take Sean's word on it today. But you see what Sean likes in him. Sean really likes his instincts, quickness, ability to run fast and stop fast. You're going to hear that from Sean a lot this year about Jaylen Waddle. His ability to stop fast is something that separates him. And now Sean Payton said the Broncos had a crystal clear vision on what they envisioned for number 17, the minute they traded for him. And that vision is essentially he can play all over the place. Sean said he can play outside in, he can play inside out. That means he can play anywhere on the field. And Cortland Sutton said he was really impressed with his run after the catch abilities. And Cort said, it's going to be interesting to see where the safety goes when we both have one on ones in single coverage. And Jaylen, I asked him, what separates him?
What makes his game special? And he said, fast, physical and exciting. So expect to see that sort of player on the field for the Broncos. And the guy that's going to be calling plays for Jaylen, Jaylen Waddle is Davis Webb. And Davis Webb, this was technically his first practice being the play caller for the Broncos. Now, it's not too different right now because in the past, Sean Payton has allowed Joel Lombardi, the former offensive coordinator, to call plays during this time and in training camp. And Sean Payton made that clear today. He said, look, nothing's really that different right now. What's different and when the transition is really going to happen is in the season on game day. So expect some jitters and nerves going to be going on from Sean, a handing over play calling in week one, Kansas City, Monday night football. Cortland Sutton said that Davis Webb is a mad scientist. And then he emphasized, he's ready. He is ready. Sean, of course, is still highly involved with this offense, but it's Davis going to be the one calling plays. And then the next player that we got our eyes on was number 27, JK Dobbins. And I'll tell you what, he is back. This is the first time that we've seen him as a true full participant since he got injured last year. He did come back for practice for the playoffs, but did not make it on the game field. And I'll tell you what, JK Dobbins looks really good. And all eyes are going to be on those three guys for a majority of training camp and the season. And I'll tell you what, it's going to be an exciting group with JK Dobbins, RJ Harvey and the rookie Jonah Coleman. Sean Payton was asked, what gives you confidence that JK Dobbins can make it through this season entirely healthy?
