The final practice of Broncos Training Camp is in the books, and we saw the best on best on Wednesday to round it out. Before I tell you everything you need to know about what happened to practice, make sure to hit us with a thumbs up on this video and subscribe to this channel. We are at every single Broncos event, practice, game, home and away. Let's dive in to what you need to know from Wednesday's practice. And it was a welcome back to Jaylen Waddle practice. Jaylen Waddle didn't waste any time making his presence felt as he makes his way back from injury. On Wednesday in the team's final training camp practice, Bo Nix looked number 17's way on the first pass of the day. And boy, was it a special one. With a special protection drawn up by Sean Payton to buy Bo Nix extra time in the pocket, Bo loaded up and launched a bomb down the right side of the field. And Jaylen Waddle had a step on the defensive player of the year, Pat Surtain. Waddle caught the pass in stride and flew into the end zone for a 60 yard touchdown. It was a perfect way for Bo Nix's first pass to go. And it was best on best. Jaylen Waddle getting the best of Pat Surtain, which does not happen often, as we all know. And Surtain, we talked to him after practice. He didn't have much to say about it other than with a smile. He said, he's got a good play. And Waddle wasn't done yet.
During the next team period, the speedy receiver made an even more impressive catch on Pat Surtain as well. This catch won't be talked about as much because it was for a much shorter game. But the degree of difficulty was much higher. On a quick slant in the middle of the field, going from the left side to the middle, Waddle got an inside step on Surtain. However, Nix threw the ball behind Waddle. So Jaylen had to adjust big time. And it did not stop him from still making a catch with Surtain draped all over him, especially on the back side, which where the ball was thrown, Waddle secured it. Then got down. It was a great catch. And Surtain after practice stated again with a smile, Waddle is quote fast. He's pretty fast. And I feel bad for Pat because he talked to the media on his worst day of camp. And it wasn't even that bad. And giving up two catches is bad for Pat Surtain's standard. But man, was he just hammered with questions about this play? You could tell understandably so. He was getting a little annoyed. He's like, you know, what I imagine is going on in his head is, guys, it was one play that I've given up. And you're focusing on this. I've shut down everyone, all of camp, except right now when I give up a 60 yard touchdown to a star receiver.
And so shout out to Pat for talking to us after his worst day of training camp. And it wasn't all that bad, but it was bad for Pat's standards. So that wasn't the only player that had a good day on offense. Evan Engram's emergence.
Evan Engram finished training camp on a very high note on back to back plays. Bo Nix looked Evan Engram's way and hit him. And this is where Bo was cooking. This was right after the 60 yard touchdown from Bo to Jaylen. And the first play, Bo hit Evan Engram on a boot to the right side. Engram was wide open and probably would have got the first down. It was just a great design of a play. Davis Webb drew it up so that Evan was pretty darn open. He caught it, would have got that first down. Then very next play was the most miraculous throw of the day. With a number of defenders in the area, Bo Nix threw a dart 25 yards down the field to the right sideline and I gotta say it looked like it was going to be picked off or at least batted incomplete and it did not. Brandon Jones was diving and somehow this pass slipped right by him, right into Evan Engram's hands. Instead of being like a disastrous throw, it was a miraculous throw. It was a dart. It was a perfect throw by Bo Nix just escaping the fingertips of Brandon Jones, right into Evan Engram's hands for another big gain. After practice, Evan Engram, I asked him, will Davis Webb being the offensive coordinator and play caller help you this year? He said, it's not only going to help me, it's going to help every single skill position player. He said, quote, I honestly think it will benefit all skill position guys. He's very hell-bent on getting guys involved, using them to our strengths, getting them in our space, and just utilizing all of our talents. He then went on to say that one thing that Davis does, he likes being aggressive, he likes deep shots, and we've seen that over training camp. Evans felt it in practice as well, that Davis is going to be aggressive, and he's going to go deep, over and over and over again. He said, when they were both teammates together with the Giants as rookies, that's one thing that Davis loved to do. As a scout team quarterback, as a backup quarterback, he loved being aggressive and going deep, and he's bringing that to the Broncos offense. So expect a lot of deep shots from Bo Nix, to Evan Engram, Jaylen Waddle, Pat Brine, Troy Franklin, Cortland Sutton, RJ. Harvey, Jonah Coleman, got a little note on him coming up as well.
